The Development Officer works in partnership with the Director of Development on all aspects of fund-raising, including foundation and government grants; corporate sponsorships; individual giving and membership; and special events. The Development Officer manages and oversees the portfolio of foundation and government agencies supporting the Museum, and conducts research to expand the portfolio of prospective donors for operating, program and capital projects. S/he is skilled in writing persuasive, compelling grant proposals; creating materials to support these proposals; and writing donor correspondence, acknowledgements, and inquiries. S/he conducts stewardship to ensure compliance with grant guidelines and ensure that reporting requirements and deadlines are met. S/he plans and executes special events such as exhibition tours and cocktail receptions targeted for stewarding donors and cultivating prospects. The Development Officer also manages and maintains key departmental systems and record keeping, including the grants calendar, database and files. In collaboration with colleagues in the Curatorial, Exhibitions, Education, and Finance departments, the Development Officer identifies new Museum initiatives, develops proposals and works to engage prospective supporters.

Responsibilities
• Project manager for all grant applications.
• Write and review grant proposals for private foundations and corporate funders in collaboration with Director of Development. Prepare supporting materials as needed.
• Prepare grant applications and reports to government agencies, including DCA, NYSCA and NEA
• Work with curatorial, exhibitions and education staff members to prepare narrative sections of proposals and reports.
• Work with finance to prepare budgets for proposals and reports.
• Conduct research on prospective donors, including individuals, foundations, corporations, and government funders, using industry standard research tools such as Wealth Engine and Foundation Directory Online.
• Maintain and update development calendar to ensure deadlines are met.
• Ensure compliance with gift terms, including donor recognition in printed and promotional materials
• Administer membership program, including appeals, mailings and benefits fulfillment.
• Working with development staff, identify stewardship and cultivation opportunities; and plan and execute special events such as exhibition tours and cocktail receptions.
• Interface and collaborate with trustees in a professional manner; persuasively represent the Museum in interactions with donors.

Qualifications
• Commitment to the organization’s mission and values
• Bachelor’s degree; art history, arts or nonprofit administration a plus
• Fundraising experience at a nonprofit organization
• Strong writing, oral communication, interpersonal, analytical and organizational skills
• Self-starter and team player, with ability to think strategically, multitask and prioritize
• Discretion in handling confidential materials
• Strong computer skills including PastPerfect and Excel; skilled in research and use of databases
• Solid math skills; experience in budgeting helpful.
