The Japanese American National Museum (JANM) is seeking an experienced fundraiser with transferable skills in individual giving and/or corporate and foundation relations to serve as the Director of Institutional Giving. Based in Los Angeles’ historic Little Tokyo neighborhood, it has a nation-wide focus and international base of support. An affiliate of the Smithsonian Institution and AAM accredited, the National Museum (www.janm.org) is recognized as one of the nations’ premier cultural museums. In 2010, the Japanese American National Museum was awarded America’s highest honor for museum, the National Medal from the IMLS.

Director of Institutional Giving – Grants will lead efforts to develop a strategic plan to secure funding from private and corporate foundations and government sources to support JANM revenue goals, working closely with program and fundraising staff.  Research and identify grant opportunities and analyze the fit for JANM and collaborators/partners. Prepare recommendations for consideration by management. Identify key foundation players and coordinate development of large-scale proposals around museum initiatives. Cultivate and sustain positive relationships with new and existing corporate, private and government foundations to broaden base of grant support. Write and edit copy for development materials, including but not limited to annual appeals and case for support.

Job Requirements

Bachelor’s degree from a four-year accredited college or university preferred.

A working knowledge of grantsmanship and grant management with at least 2 years of previous experience.  Additional experience in individual giving fundraising or development operations; previous experience working in a non-profit or museum beneficial. Superior organizational skills and attention to detail are critical; must have strong ability to multi-task, prioritize, and work well under pressure to meet multiple competing deadlines. Experience in professional or technical writing, especially for fund raising. Familiarity with regional, national and Japanese funders is desired. Knowledge of Japanese American history and culture helpful but not required; however, sensitivity to issues of diversity and ethnicity is essential. Experience in Altru or similar fundraising software. Internet savvy, and familiarity with online foundation or member directories and using databases.
