The Metropolitan Museum of Art, one of the world’s finest museums, seeks a Curator In Charge for the Drawing and Prints Department. The successful candidate will be the intellectual and administrative leader of the Department of Drawings and Prints, charged with enhancing the Museum’s holdings by acquiring drawings and, prints that are the finest and most representative of their kind.  The position directs acquisitions, storage, research on, and exhibition of collections, as well as negotiating and authorizing the purchase, sale, exchange, and loan of works of art. The position has oversight for staff management and administration of the department.

Primary Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Responsible for directing departmental exhibitions, research, publications and acquisitions
  • Manages care of and research of the collection
  • Responsible for supervision of all department record keeping and cataloguing
  • Ensures management of all gallery exhibits, special exhibitions, and long-term loans
  • Oversees all department contributions to public programs
  • Collaborates with all curatorial departments, especially those with collections of works on paper
  • Works closely with Paper Conservation to guide examination and treatment of drawings and print.
  • Responsible for department interaction with collectors and potential supporters
  • Responsible for planning meetings for the Visiting Committee
  • Oversees preparation of general and scholarly publications
  • Other related duties

Experience and Skills:

  • Minimum of ten years’ experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities required
  • Demonstrated experience in accomplishing original research on objects of various regions and cultures of the collection required
  • Ability to plan, organize, and present exhibitions required
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills required
  • Ability to manage staff and resources and to communicate with professionals within and outside the field
  • Museum experience required

Knowledge and Education:

  • Ph.D. in Art History with a concentration in relevant field required
  • Recognized achievement for expertise and scholarship in the field required
  • Good working knowledge of European languages required
  • Strong record of publications in the field required
