The department of Interpretation at the Philadelphia Museum of Art seeks a full-time Collection Interpreter. Charged with the task of making art accessible and engaging to the broadest possible audience, the department of Interpretation oversees all interpretive initiatives for both special exhibitions and the Museum’s permanent collection. Reporting to the Assistant Director for Interpretation, the Interpreter is expected to participate in all aspects of the interpretive process, which includes, but is not limited to, the writing of interpretive plans, development of new interpretive tools and technologies, and the conducting of audience research.
 

The individual who holds this position must possess a comprehensive knowledge of the history of art as well as interpretive theory, museology, and evaluative practices. The Position requires a Master’s degree in art history and two to three years of museum or related academic experience.  The successful candidate must exhibit proven experience working successfully in collaborative environments. S/he must also possess excellent organizational skills, follow-through, and attention to detail, as well as the ability to develop effective work processes, and coordinate multiple projects simultaneously. Most importantly, the Interpreter needs to demonstrate a willingness to innovate and experiment with new modes of visitor engagement. Excellent writing skills are required.
