The Hyde Collection is seeking a forward-looking Curator to lead the department.  As a vital member of the Museum’s senior staff, the Curator reports to the Director.  This opportunity includes the development, design and implementation of innovative exhibitions; the care, management, and development of the collection; management of staff and budget; and cultivation of donors for acquisition funds and gifts of art.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

Collections: The Curator oversees the acquisition, care, preservation, exhibition, and loan of objects in the permanent collection in accordance with the Museum’s Collections Management Policy and standards set forth by the American Alliance of Museums. With the curatorial staff, the Curator ensures the appropriate handling, security, storage, documentation, and inventory of objects; develops wall text, labels, and catalogue entries; and researches, lectures, and writes about the collection.  With the Director, the Curator seeks and recommends additions to the permanent collection; prepares and presents research related to accessions or deaccessions to the Trustees.

 

Exhibitions: With the Director and senior staff, the Curator creates multi-year exhibition schedules.  The Curator is responsible for the selection and negotiation of loans and the creation and implementation of exhibit design, installation, wall text, and labels. The Curator may also research and write catalogues, brochures, and presentations.

Inter-disciplinary:  The Curator collaborates with the Curator of Education on programming, gallery tours, and docent training.  With the Director of Communications, the Curator participates in publicity in support of the exhibitions.  With the Director and the Director of Development, the Curator assists in cultivation of collectors and donors.  The Curator also writes content for grants in support of curatorial programs and supports the travel program.

Administrative: The Curator provides supervision to curatorial staff, interns, volunteers, and contractors; creates and administers department budgets; holds regular planning meetings; and attends staff meetings. The Curator represents The Hyde Collection at social and civic events, serves on committees or panels, and attends meetings as demanded by the position.

Job Requirements

M.A. or PhD. in appropriate field with at least five years of increasingly responsible curatorial experience and a record of exhibitions and publications.  A demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, to all internal and external constituencies.  Depth of scholarship of field and knowledge of collections care and documentation issues.  A team-player with experience managing staff and budgets.
