The University of Dallas is a highly-ranked liberal arts institution. The Department of Art consists of five areas of study including Art History, Ceramics, Painting, Printmaking, and Sculpture and offers BA, MA, and MFA degrees. The Beatrice M. Haggerty Art Gallery is the University’s primary professional exhibition space.  Its mission is to enhance the cultural and educational environment of students, faculty, and staff at UD, and to provide outreach to the larger community.  The Haggerty Gallery serves the University’s Art Department by offering exhibitions of the highest quality, offering a bridge between the learning environment and diverse contemporary artistic practice.

Description:

The University of Dallas is seeking the position of Beatrice M. Haggerty Gallery Director and Affiliate Assistant/Associate Professor of Art (non-tenure track). The successful candidate will be responsible for curating exhibits of professional artists for the gallery that will enhance the studio/classroom education. Exhibitions that reinforce the wide variety of disciplines within the corpus of the university are especially of interest. As Director, the individual will also have the following duties:

  • Curatorial

    • Assess and select artwork
    • Work closely with individual artists, developing relationships with new artists, and extending relationships with established artists
    • Negotiate loans with other art institutions
  • Outreach and Public Awareness

    • Create and implement opportunities that introduce diverse perspectives to the gallery through associations with, but not limited to, the greater university, student body, DFW arts community and the regional community of artists.
    • Extend and develop the visitor/patron database
    • Develop fruitful relationships with volunteer and philanthropically-minded groups and individuals
  • Fundraising/Grant Writing: Fundraise and write grants to fund exhibitions, operation and gallery development

  • Gallery and Facility Management- Director is responsible for all functions related to the gallery.

  • Develop and maintain the gallery’s general administration, budgeting, finance and accounts
    • Prepare condition reports, hang exhibitions, prepare labels, lights, signage

    • Develop, manage, and grow an annual operating budget

    • Maintain an ongoing promotion and advertising program of the gallery, marketing exhibitions and shows and managing public relations

    • Develop and update the gallery website

Moreover, as an integral member of the art department faculty, the Director will teach up to four credits per semester.  These classes would be at the discretion of the department but could possibly include Gallery Practicum, Senior Seminar, MA/MFA Seminar, or newly developed coursework.

Minimum Requirements:

With submitted materials, the candidate must show:

  • Graduate degree in art/art history (MFA or MA/PhD) with at least three years curatorial experience

  • College-level teaching experience

  • Success with art and exhibition-related fundraising and grant-writing

  • Experience supervising gallery operations and budget

  • Ability to network with diverse populations and institutions

  • Experience with digital resources and website development

  • Commitment to both community art activities and individual student mentoring

  • Proven ability to work cooperatively and effectively with volunteers and in community relations and outreach capacities
