Founded in 1944, the Cambridge Art Association (CAA) consists of more than 500 juried artist members — photographers, printmakers, painters, sculptors, textile artists, and glass makers and a supporting group of Friend Members. The purpose of the organization, while constantly evolving as artists’ needs change, also remains much the same as it was in the 1940’s: to enhance the quality of the community by exhibiting art, supporting local artists, and creating diverse opportunities for art education and art appreciation.
Throughout the year, CAA presents 20 members exhibitions per year, in two gallery spaces in addition to hanging work at the Eastern Bank at Kendall Square. Two times a year CAA offers juried exhibits open to all New England with the Northeast Prize Show and Blue (or) Red. And this year, we present our 11th National Prize Show, open to established and emerging artists across the U.S.
Jurors for CAA exhibitions have included Malcolm Rogers, the Ann and Graham Gund Director of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; Maxwell Anderson, the Director of the Whitney Museum in New York; Robert Fitzpatrick, Pritzker Director of the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago; Lisa Dennison, Director of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum; Marc Pachter, Director of The National Portrait Gallery, and Joseph Thompson, Director of the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art (Mass MoCA) and recently, Carl Belz, Director Emeritus of the Rose Art Museum, Brandeis University.
The Cambridge Art Association is a 501c3 nonprofit organization, supported, in part by funding from the Massachusetts Cultural Council, the Cambridge Arts Council, and the Cambridge Community Foundation. The Cambridge Art Association is an equal opportunity institution and does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national origin, sex, religion, age, disability, sexual orientation, gender identity, veteran status, height, weight, or marital status in employment or the provision of services and is an equal access/equal opportunity/affirmative action employer.
