Job Description:
Reporting to the Director, the Curator of Exhibitions is responsible for, but is not limited to, overseeing and curating exhibitions. This position has administrative responsibility for all aspects of museum exhibitions, including budgetary, scholarly, and editorial matters, and will collaborate with art historians and studio arts professionals. The Fralin Museum of Art is located on the University of Virginia’s historic grounds, designated as a UNESCO world heritage site in 1987, in Charlottesville, Virginia. Its collection features approximately 13,000 objects. The Fralin opened its doors in 1935 and in its early years, received several important works of art, including 17th century French and Flemish tapestries, two Rodin sculptures, and Frederic Church’s Natural Bridge, Virginia. The Fralin exhibits American and European painting, works on paper, and sculpture of the 15th-20th centuries; art from the ancient Mediterranean; Asian art; Native American art. Job Requirements
Qualifications (Education and Experience):
MA in Art History or art-related field, PhD preferred; qualified candidates should have a minimum of 4 years of curatorial experience focused on exhibition management and extensive knowledge of art. Must have experience in long-range and strategic planning as it pertains to exhibitions.
Candidates must also have a high level of administrative experience, excellent organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills, the ability to work effectively in a leadership position within a collaborative environment, and must be capable of working collegially with a diverse group of faculty, staff and students on a daily basis.
