Job Description
The Heard Museum seeks a Director of Marketing and Communications responsible for developing an institutional marketing strategy that builds awareness of the Heard, while identifying and growing Museum audiences. Responsible for the development and implementation of overall marketing and communication strategies including, marketing, advertising, public relations, brand management, social media and internal communications. The ideal candidate should have experience creating comprehensive marketing and advertising campaigns across media channels-digital, social search and traditional.
Job Requirements
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:
Planning: Creates and oversees an overall marketing plan, including media strategies, budgets, communications messages, marketing programs and advertising campaigns to reach preset goals for the museum’s exhibits, events and focus areas. Working closely with staff and/or volunteer project leaders who are in charge of the projects assigned. Oversees the work of communications managers, tourism outreach manager and other staff members and/or interns.
Media Relations: Oversees all media relations efforts and ensures that media are aware of and writing/reporting about the museum’s exhibits and programs. Oversight of proper writing and editing of media materials including news releases and calendar announcements for distribution to local and national media. Pitches stories to key media and secures placement in publications that reach targeted audiences, in cooperation with the PR and/or Communications Manager. Works with the Project Leader(s) to secure photographs to distribute to the media and to use in publications.
Marketing: Leading the team and collaborating across communications and museum functions. Creates and oversees the overall strategy of the Marketing Department and develops an encompassing plan that targets key audiences and works to increase visitor involvement and revenue generating activities. Identifies and works with community, corporate and media partners.
Market Research: Oversees market research to ascertain the perceptions of visitors and the general public. Develops evaluations that will direct all communications efforts including public relations, marketing and advertising. Evaluates visitors’ perceptions and gauges whether programs are meeting their objectives. Communicates visitor data to staff to increase overall effectiveness.
Evaluates the effectiveness of marketing and communications strategies on an ongoing basis. Keeps department staff focused on reaching target audiences and helping them work in an efficient, balanced and effective way.
Budget: General oversight of all budgets of the Marketing Department. Direct management of the budget for projects assigned. Oversees the budgets and ensures prudent spending for public relations, advertising and marketing.
The ideal candidate should have experience creating comprehensive marketing and advertising campaigns across media channels-digital, social search and traditional. Bachelor’s degree and7+ years’ experience in marketing and at least 4 years in a senior position with audience development and managerial responsibility. Agency experience preferred.
