Director. Seeking energetic, self-motivated individual to be director of the second largest general interest museum in the State of Tennessee. The Museum has an annual operating budget of $850,000.  Candidate must possess sound time management skills, be highly organized, and able to use team approach in problem solving.  Responsible for supervision of 11 full-time and 3 part-time staff; budget development and maintenance; long-range plan development and implementation; grant solicitation; and, community involvement.  Must have successful history of fundraising.  Experience desirable in public speaking and volunteer programs.  Qualifications: A minimum of a master’s degree in museum studies or related field. 10 years of museum experience required, demonstrating increasing levels of responsibility. Director of Clarksville-Montgomery County Museum d/b/a Customs House Museum and Cultural Center

The Customs House Museum and Cultural Center seeks a dynamic and energetic leader to become its next director.  The Director leads the museum’s artistic and programmatic vision in collaboration with its professional staff and with guidance from its Board of Directors. The Director is responsible for the implementation of the organizational vision to expose the widest audience possible to the creativity and ingenuity of the human spirit through art, science and history within the context of cultural diversity.

The Museum seeks candidates with strong commitments to community engagements, audience development and enthusiasm for exhibitions and educational programs.  The ideal candidate will be a team player, able to lead with innovative vision for the future of the museum.  Moreover, the candidate will have a track record of successful fundraising and fiscal management.

The Museum organizes and presents an average of thirty exhibitions each year along with a sizable roster of adult and youth programs, school visits, and workshops.  Exhibitions aim to engage diverse audiences of all ages and backgrounds with emphasis on local and regional history and art, in all its various forms.

The Museum has launched a full array of exhibits and opportunities for its audiences.  These include such things as regular art and lunch programs, an interactive local history exhibit, and juried art exhibitions.  These programs have been and should continue to be vital to the life and growth of our city and region.

The Customs House Museum is located in historic downtown Clarksville, Tennessee.  The director should have experience in developing and guiding events and activities in a downtown area.  This includes activities within the confines of the museum itself, as well as active participation in efforts to revitalize the downtown area.

The director manages the staff and develops museum goals, objectives and programs.  The Museum has eleven full time and three part time staff, as well as numerous volunteers and interns.

Candidates are required to have a minimum of a master’s degree in Museum Studies, Public History, Museology or a closely related field.  Strong knowledge of the museum field is required.  A minimum of 10 years’ work experience in museum and/or related institutions is also required, showing an increasing level of responsibility.  Preferably, the museum experience will be in an administrative position demonstrating the candidate’s supervisory skills; exhibit development; and, program development.  Candidates should have a demonstrable track record of successful fundraising and effective fiscal management.  Excellent verbal and written skills are required; desire to connect with broad public audiences, including business leaders, donors, members, artists, and other professionals.  Ability to work collaboratively with staff, Board of Directors, and other museum stakeholders as well as elected officials is expected. The museum is not currently accredited by the American Alliance of Museums (AAM), but it is expected that the new director will be prepared to lead the Museum to this goal.
