Job Description

The National Institute of American History and Democracy (NIAHD) began in 2001 as a partnership between the College of William & Mary and The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation to sponsor educational programs in American History, Public History, Material Culture, and Museum Studies. NIAHD operates a residential program for high school students and college-level programs that serve William & Mary undergraduate and graduate students as well as bring students from other colleges and universities to study in Williamsburg for a semester or a year.

NIAHD has several self-sustaining programs and continues to seek additional funding from outside sources to support the institute.

The Director is the chief operating officer of NIAHD. The Director assumes primary responsibility for the program goals and is responsible for supervising, directing, handling directly and/or overseeing all aspects of the program. This is a 12-month administrative professional position.
Responsibilities include: Curriculum development and administration, supervision of support staff and recruitment of instructors, publicity and promotion for program offerings, and recruitment and selection of program participants. Director is also responsible for the financial administration of day-to-day operations and fundraising, as well as donor and collaborator relations.

Required Qualifications: Doctorate in History or Higher Education or allied field with at least one graduate degree in History. Teaching experience at the college level.  Experience in educational administration and/or museum education.
