Description

The Cleveland Museum of Art seeks a highly motivated, experienced curator of European painting and sculpture, specializing in the period between 1500 and 1800. The collection of European Paintings and Sculpture is of international importance, with particular strengths in Italian and Spanish Baroque painting, as well as 17th-century Northern art and Renaissance bronzes, making this position an extraordinary opportunity.

The Museum is seeking candidates who are committed to actively and creatively participating in the exhibitions program and spearheading significant acquisitions. While each candidate will have a particular area of scholarly expertise, we are looking for curators with a wide range of interests and ambitions who will aspire to work within and beyond their specialization, and who are eager to reach out to colleagues in other institutions to collaborate on projects. Candidates who have a wide range of contacts in the curatorial world and in the trade, and who value communication and collaboration among their peers will be especially appealing. The Curator of European Paintings and Sculpture, 1500-1800, reports to the Chief Curator.

Primary responsibilities include:

  • Pursuing scholarly research to support acquisitions, the installation of the collection, exhibitions, publications, and gallery installations.
  • In consultation with the Museum Director and Chief Curator, reviewing and changing as necessary the current plan for the development of the collection and acquiring major works of art through purchase and donation.
  • Installation of the galleries of European paintings and sculpture, 1500-1800, working as appropriate with curatorial colleagues to integrate objects from other collections.
  • Proposing ideas for exhibitions and publications and then, working with the Chief Curator and Director of Exhibitions and Publications to develop projects.
  • Working with colleagues in the Education Department on programs related to the collection and didactic materials. Leveraging opportunities to utilize electronic means to interpret European art.
  • Working with colleagues in Advancement to identify and nurture potential donors for projects related to the collection.

Letters of application must include the following:

  • A cover letter that addresses the candidate’s interest in the position.
  • A published paper or writing sample.
  • A complete curriculum vitae of education, employment, honors, awards, and publications.
  • The names and contact information of three references.
