The Baltimore Museum of Industry seeks a Director of Interpretation to lead the museum’s interpretive efforts, including oversight of our growing exhibition program and our dynamic educational, outreach, and public programs. In partnership with the museum’s senior staff, the Director of Interpretation is responsible for establishing strategic priorities for ongoing and future educational and exhibition projects and ensuring the integrity and effectiveness of our interpretive program and its relevance to diverse audiences. The position supervises the museum’s education and program staff, and recruits and manages curatorial consultants, fostering collaboration and mutual support among the various departments and museum functions to provide a positive and meaningful experience for our visitors.

This is a senior level position, reporting to the Executive Director. The BMI recently completed a three-year strategic plan, which envisions significant growth in our interpretive programs; the Director of Interpretation has the opportunity to help shape the museum’s future as we envision the next generation of programs and services. In that capacity, the Director of Interpretation has the following responsibilities:

Lead the Museum’s Education Department:

  • Supervise two full-time staff and 25 part-time museum educators in the delivery of an array of educational programs to a wide range of visitors
  • Evaluate, create, enhance, and deliver MSDE curriculum-based school programs to school groups
  • Grow and direct the museum’s volunteer docent program, group tour program, and other outreach efforts

Oversee the Museum’s Exhibition Program:

  • Lead the development of a five-year interpretive plan for the museum’s permanent exhibitions and implement the plan as appropriate
  • Enliven and update the museum’s current exhibitions and oversee the museum’s temporary exhibition program, and provide interpretive direction for the museum’s campus master plan

Supervise the Museum’s Project Director:

  • Provide strategic oversight of the museum’s public programs to ensure delivery of varied programmatic experiences for adult and family audiences
  • Develop strategic partnerships to enhance reach and impact of the museum’s programs

Serve as a member of the museum’s senior management team:

  • Plan strategically for the museum’s future
  • As part of the team, work to advance the museum’s visibility, visitorship, funding, and stature

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Graduate degree in American history, museum studies, education and/or related field
  • Knowledge of American economic, technological, and cultural history; specific knowledge and Maryland and Baltimore area history highly desirable
  • 5-10 years experience in exhibition development and curation, informal education, and programming
  • Demonstrated record of increasing on-the-job responsibilities in prior museum experience, including staff supervision, hiring and management of consultants, and budget development and tracking
  • Track record of building successful community partnerships
  • Superior written and oral communication skills
  • The ideal candidate will be a “big picture” thinker who is capable of envisioning ambitious improvements in the way the BMI delivers services, and who can think tactically about how to achieve those ambitions and implement plans. The ability to work cooperatively and flexibly in a team environment is absolutely essential.
