POSITION SUMMARY: Reporting to the Senior Manager of the Careers in Science (CiS) and Teen Advocates for Science Communication (TASC) Force programs, the TASC Force Assistant Manager is responsible for the support, design, and implementation of the TASC Force program and the support of broader Youth Program initiatives. This position will lead key components of the TASC Force program, including programmatic design, evaluation, and coordination. This position is also responsible for the implementation of a variety of Youth Programs projects, including facilitating the logistics and coordination of youth recruitment, special events, outreach, database development and maintenance, and administrative support.  This position involves significant late afternoon/early evening work and weekend work in order to accommodate students’ after school and non-school availability.

 

The TASC Force works with San Francisco Bay Area middle and high school youth volunteers to learn and apply science content and public engagement strategies and then develop and deliver innovative public experiences and products for the Academy’s 1.3 million annual visitors.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Teen Advocates of Science Communication
    • Working closely with the Senior Manager of Careers in Science and TASC Force,  manage all aspects of the TASC Force program and youth experience.
    • Develop educational programs and products for teens to use in public education, incorporating youth involvement whenever appropriate.
    • Create youth experiences that enhance Academy visitor experiences through interactions with program participants or their science educational products.
    • Supervise, manage, and evaluate TASC program assistant(s) and youth volunteers.
    • Actively cultivate teens through mentoring, ongoing training, team building, and recognition to encourage interest and involvement with science.
    • Assist in the management of the TASC Force Program budget and evaluation, and help with preparations of reports and proposals as requested.
  • Youth Programs
    • Lead the planning, coordination, and implementation of a variety of Youth Programs projects
    • Coordinate multi-programmatic recruitment efforts to support all Youth Program needs and goals.
    • Provide logistical support and coordination for outreach, special events, and educational activities.
    • Manage the development, implementation, and continued success of Youth Programs’ databases and information resources
  • Contribute broadly to the youth experience at the Academy, including assisting with the design and delivery of other youth programs as needed and helping build the youth community
  • Represent the TASC Force Program, the Youth Programs portfolio, and the Teacher & Youth Education Department internally and externally.
  • Follow all Academy safety regulations
  • Other projects and duties as assigned

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: The ideal candidate will possess a combination of the following education and/or equivalent experience

  • Bachelor’s degree required, natural science or education degree strongly preferred. Masters preferred.
  • At least two (2) years experience developing and delivering teen science programming in an informal environment, including training youth as public educators; museum experience highly preferred
  • At least two (2) year demonstrated experience working in a leadership role with youth (ages 14-20); three or more years preferred
  • Experience supervising, recruiting, overseeing and evaluating staff/volunteers preferred
  • Current CPR/First Aid certification, or willingness to obtain; higher level training desirable

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Strong commitment to youth development, science education, and sustainability
  • Demonstrated ability to forge successful partnerships internally and externally
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with multi-generational and multi-cultural constituencies
  • Demonstrated experience with project management and ability  to prioritize work and make sound decisions in a fast-paced environment with multiple deadlinesKnowledge of current best practices in science education and youth development
  • Current California driver’s license with a clean driving record and willingness and ability to transport youth on field trips and other Academy-sanctioned events
  • Available to work weekend days, late afternoon weekdays, and occasional evening events and overnight trips
  • Strong organizational, oral and written skills
  • Computer literacy required (MS Office Suite/Apple OS); Adobe Creative Suite desirable

 

MANDATED REPORTER: This is mandated reporter designated position.  Academy employees whose duties include direct contact and supervision of children are deemed mandated reporters under California Law.  Mandated reporters have certain specific reporting obligations in the event that they know of, observe or reasonably suspect that a child has been the victim of child abuse or neglect.  The Academy provides mandated reporters with training of their rights and obligations under the Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act.

 

LANGUAGE SKILLS:  Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.  Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.  Ability to speak effectively before groups or individuals.
