Responsible for:

• The development and implementation of participatory and experiential activities, workshops, festivals, performances and

other programs for families of all types, especially those with children.

• Facilitating community engagement through collaboration with artists, partner groups, and other local institutions.

1 Responsible for the selection, planning, organization, and implementation of a wide variety of offerings for

families and their children, including drop-in programs, performances, festivals, sleepovers, workshops, and in-
gallery experiences for families and their children.

2 Shapes family programs to achieve department goals; reinforces the Skirball’s reputation as a major family

destination that supports family learning through the arts, cross-cultural programming, and inter-generational

3 Manages a team of regular and on-call staff and volunteers (teen and adult) focused on family programs;

provides leadership, support, and guidance to ensure content and experience goals are met.

4 Cultivates and sustains relationships with community partners (both non- and for-profit entities) that enhance

SCC’s ability to serve family audiences in mission-aligned ways and realize its social justice goals, in particular.

5 Works to build widespread community interest in all Skirball programs and a large and diverse public audience

for family programs through networking, creating/implementing community outreach plans, creating/

implementing collaborative projects and classes with cultural and/or institutional partners.

6 Participates as part of the Education Department’s management team; collaborates effectively with other

managers and with the Vice President of Education to set goals and priorities, build leadership, hire staff, and

7 Works closely with members of other Skirball departments, especially Public Programs, Operations,

Communications and Marketing, and Private Events, to ensure smooth, collaborative planning and successful

implementation of—and clear communication regarding—all Skirball family programs.

8 Establishes plans for evaluation of programs; fosters a culture of reflection and evaluation through the collection

of visitor feedback and staff reflection; responds to feedback in a meaningful way.

9 Identifies artists for family programs. Shapes or collaborates on content and negotiates/contracts for their

services; Coordinates all performances with the Public Programs department to ensure an appropriate and wise

use of physical, fiscal and human resources to meet institution-wide objectives.

10 Develops/writes planning and program materials for events; oversees production and distribution of same.

11 Develops annual budget and tracks/controls expenses to ensure compliance with approved budget.

12 Oversees staff purchases of supplies and equipment, and the inventory and storage of all materials, ensuring

that adequate materials are on hand for all programs.

13 Develops and maintains skills through participation in conferences, workshops, further education and reading/

researching professional literature.

• Represents Family Programs at SCC meetings as assigned.

• Performs related duties as required to meet Skirball mission and goals.

ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL ACTIVITY

The incumbent is in an office-type setting in which he or she is free to move about at will. The incumbent is expected to travel

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

These specifications are general guidelines based upon the minimum experience normally considered essential to the

To perform effectively in this position, the incumbent must have:

· Professional experience in family and/or experiential learning within a community learning center, college or university,

museum, and/or other cultural institution.

· Prior experience creating and/facilitating participatory children’s/family programs.

· Very effective written, oral, and listening communications skills and the ability to work with people of diverse cultures,

ages, and economic backgrounds; detail-oriented and skilled at long-term planning and goal-setting.

· Effective managerial/leadership skills sufficient to manage a small staff and lead volunteers and coordinate programs.

· Established relationships with community leaders, organizations and centers in Los Angeles that serve diverse children and

· Proficiency in Word, Excel, and Filemaker (or comparable database software).

· Math skills sufficient to manage the function’s budget.

· As a manager, a willingness to assist where needed; accept and support change; and set goals and inspire individuals with

· Have a keen appreciation and understanding of the Skirball Cultural Center mission and philosophy.

· Knowledge of Jewish culture and history and/or background in cultural studies.

· Background in community engagement or artist relations.
