Executive Director of the Montgomery County Historical Society

The Montgomery County Historical Society (MCHS), a private non-profit organization located in Rockville, Montgomery County, Maryland seeks a full-time Executive Director. The MCHS mission is to collect, interpret, and promote the history, heritage, and culture of Montgomery County, Maryland. This is a permanent, full-time position averaging 40 hours a week.

Duties: The ED serves as chief executive officer of the Society and is responsible for managing staff, volunteers, programs, and finances as required by the Board of Directors.

The responsibiliities of the Executive Director include:

Facilities: The ED is reponsible for operations at the MCHS headquarters campus in Rockville, MD including the Beall-Dawson House museum, the Stonestreet Museum of 19th Century Medicine, the Jane C. Sween library and archive, the MCHS administration building, and an adjacent storage building.

Finances: The ED is responsible for maintaining a balanced budget and reporting regularly to the Tresurer and Board of Directors on financial and budget matters.

Fundraising: The ED maintains current revenue generating and fundraising activities to support existing program operations and expands revenue and programs through the development of new grant requests to local, state and federal agencies and companies.  Since a large percentage of the Society’s budget comes from local government, the ED must be experienced in relating to government officials and agency employees.

Programs: The ED oversees programs including: educational programs for county public and private elementary school students and the annual Montgomery County History Day for public and private middle and high school students, the MCHS Library and Archive, Heritage Days, the Montgomery County History Conference, Happy Birthday Montgomery County, the Annual Meeting of Members, Volunteer Recognition events, the Museum Shop, the bi-annual Montgomery County Story, the Mary Kay Harper Center for Suburban Studies, exhibitions, lectures, and special events.

Collections: The ED supervises a professional archivist, curator and librarian and advises the Board regarding acquisitions and deaccessions per the MCHS Collection Policy.

Public Relations: The ED is the Society’s “face” to the community and represents the Society at governmental hearings and professional association meetings; promotes the Society to the media, the business community, and the general public; and continues the Society’s leadership role in working with other County historical organizations on collaborative programs.

Personnel: The ED supervises all MCHS staff and recruits, interviews and hires new staff as needed. The ED also conducts an annual review with each staff member.

Board Relations: The ED and Board work together as partners in carrying out the MCHS mission. The ED recommends the agenda for each Board meeting, attends all Board meetings, and makes an ED report at all Board meetings. The ED reports directly to the Board of Directors through the Board President.

Job Requirements

Job Requirements and Qualifications:

– Five or more years senior nonprofit management experience.

– Degree in History, Museum Studies/Management, American Studies, or other relevant discipline (advanced degree preferred).

– Experience in budget management including budget preparation, analysis, tracking, adjusting, and reporting.

– Strong organizational abilities including organization administration, program planning, development and implementation; task delegation; and task management.

– Knowledge and experience in nonprofit fundraising strategies, donor development strategies, and grant writing/implementation.

– Skills and experience in managing and motivating staff, Board members, and volunteers.

– Experience in interfacing with and engaging diverse volunteer and donor groups.
