Museum Director Roles/Responsibilities
The National Museum of the Morgan Horse is dedicated to preserving and interpreting all aspects of the
MORGAN horse breed through educational programs, exhibits and special events. The Museum
Director, in conjunction with the AMHA Executive Director, is responsible for developing the strategic
direction and establishing initiatives to fulfill the mission of the Museum and increase local, statewide,
national and international awareness and prominence.
Directs the museum’s operations, to include development (fundraising), education and public
programming, finance, and external communications.
Manages and leads part time staff, volunteers, and consultants.
Leads and participates in all fundraising and development activities, including grant writing and
developing relationships with foundations, corporations, and individual donors.
Serves as spokesperson and chief advocate for the Museum. Establishes strong partnerships in
the community. Enhances the Museum’s public image to expand interest and support.
Directs the overall development of public relations and marketing initiatives. Develops an
effective communications plan to raise the profile of the museum.
Manages, secures and maintains the property and facilities of the Museum, as well as the
collections held at Middlebury College
– Minimum education of Bachelor’s degree in related field
– Preferred experience in museum, library, and/or nonprofit organization
– Background in equine history a plus.
– Ability to provide strong leadership, vision and strategic direction. Experience developing and
implementing strategic plans a plus.
– Demonstrated knowledge of standards and best practices for museums
– Strong record of success in fundraising and grant writing
– Demonstrated skills in writing, research and public speaking
– Excellent planning, time management, initiative and decision making skills required.
– Willingness to work variable schedule including weekends and evenings as needed.
– Must be able to physically perform duties as required
– Must have valid driver’s license
This is a full time position and salary commensurate with experience.
This position is based at the National Museum of the Morgan Horse located in Middlebury, VT and
Museum Director must be onsite during business hours to oversee operations.
Museum hours are generally 10 AM to 5 PM Tuesday – Saturday April 1 – October 31st; 10 AM to 5 PM
Thursday – Saturday November 1st – March 31st
• Develop, implement and execute the strategic goals with input from the Museum Advisory Council for cultivating
and generating individual and corporate sponsorships.
•Assist the Fundraising/Events subcommittee with developing and implementing an annual calendar of
events for fundraising, mission essential activities, and membership driven activities.
• Assist the Membership/Marketing subcommittee with its annual goals of broadening and growing its
•Maintain current and accurate data on all donors and members.
•Implement and execute marketing strategies and tactics devised by the Membership/Marketing
subcommittee for the purpose of promoting Museum events and visitor attractions.
•Collect and archive press clippings, ads, photos, and video from the Museum and Museum produced events.
•Produce and coordinate all written communications to constituents (emails, letters, press releases, exhibit
descriptions, etc.) That is of professional, error free quality.
•Promote the Museum and its activities through effective and efficient means of public relations media
outlets. Including production of articles for AMHA newsletters & Morgan Horse magazine
• Deliver well ‐designed public presentations about the Museum to outside groups interested in learning about the
• Assist in developing a realistic annual budget for submission to the Executive Director for approval.
•Understand, manage, and adhere to the approved annual operating budget.

Ensure proper care and controls of cash receipts from donor and gift shop sales
• Ensure the Museum is open and staffed during posted hours of operation.
•Recruit, train, schedule, and retain a team of staff & volunteers necessary for the operation of the
• Capture, record, and report accurate visitation counts and other metrics necessary for assessing the
success of the Museum in achieving its mission.
• Oversee the upkeep and maintenance of the building, physical plant, and exhibits.
• Oversee on-site Museum gift shop.
• Ensure smooth operation of the Museum’s business office as well as all exhibits and displays.
•Purchase and maintain proper inventory of all required supplies for the Museum’s daily operation.
•Act as primary liaison with all vendors and vendor contracts regarding services associated with Museum’s
operations such as tech support, cleaning services, office equipment, etc.
• Oversee the production of all Museum exhibits & events as well as manages the Museum’s annual calendar
of events. Based on approved policies- evaluate, document and accept/deny archival materials
Conduct historical research upon request or as needed for articles, speeches, exhibits, etc.
•Maintain organized files (paper or computer) with adequate back up files.
