Research Updates and Funding Opportunities From DRA – March 23

Good Afternoon TUSDM Research Community,
Please find this week’s research updates below. Please do not hesitate to reach out to your research administrator if you have any questions.

DRA’s FAQ of the Week: Do I need IRB approval if I’m Working With Faculty From Another Institution? Your colleague at the other institution will first need to verify with their IRB what is required to have you be a part of their research team. Next, we will need to submit to the Tufts IRB for a formal determination. Please provide the following information to Ann-Marie Billig so she can determine how to best proceed: your role in the study, what data you will have access to (identifiable, de-identified, analyzed, aggregate) and any documents from the other school such as their IRB approval letter and protocol.

AADOCR Annual Meeting and Exhibition 2023 Recap The American Association for Dental, Oral and Craniofacial Research (AADOCR) held its annual meeting in Portland, Oregon from March 15-18. It was the first in-person annual meeting since 2019 and participants were enthusiastic about once-again being able to interact and network with other dental researchers from around the world. TUSDM was well represented by the 25 presenters, made up of faculty, staff, and students. In addition to having a Tufts booth for the 2-day exhibition hall and hosting a well-attended Tufts reception on Thursday evening, here are some of the highlights of 2023 AADOCR meeting:
Olivia Marino, D24, presented her research “Evaluation of Oral Health Outreach Program in Zambia Over Time” as part of the SCADA Competition – Clinical Research/Public Health category
Dr. Jake Chen presented his research “MiR-335-5p is a Potent Pharmaceutic Agent for Treating Osteoporosis and its Related Bone Disorders” as part of a Symposium on microRNA and Gene Regulation of Craniofacial/Tooth Development and Repair

Dr. Zoe Zhu presented her research “A Novel IncRNA-Mediated Epigenetic Regulatory Mechanism in Periodontitis” as one of eight finalists for the 2023 AADOCR Joseph Lister Award for New Investigators.

Dr. Yau-Hua Yu was part of the NIDCR Trainee Research Poster Presentations, presenting “Candidate loci shared among periodontal disease, diabetes and bone density”
