Tufts Annual GIS Expo

Every spring, The Data Lab and Tufts Technology Services hosts the annual GIS Expo. Students, faculty, and staff are invited to present their work as part of a university-wide exposition of geospatial research at Tufts.

Submit your GIS Project to the GIS Expo Event or GIS Expo Application

Students, faculty, researchers or staff can submit a GIS poster or GIS web project (StoryMap, Dashboard, Application) to the GIS Expo Event. You do not have to be in a GIS class to submit a geospatial project. Everyone is welcome to participate in the GIS Expo.

There are no formal presentations at the GIS Poster Expo. Additionally, you do not need to be in attendance to have your project included in the GIS expo.

AWARDS: There are multiple prizes awarded at the GIS Expo for intro level student projects and advanced level student projects. All submissions are automatically considered for awards. Award winners from the Tufts GIS expo will receive a cash prize ($100 for Best in Show, $50 for Runner Ups) and their projects will be brought to the ESRI Users Conference in San Diego in July to be part of their Map Gallery and competition. We have had many Tufts students win internationally recognized prizes at this event, so it’s an excellent opportunity to promote your GIS project worldwide.


Submission Guidelines:

1) Submit your GIS Project

  • Submit using the GIS Project Metadata Form before the submission deadline.
  • Check the box for “Include my project in the GIS Expo event”.
  • Note: If you already submitted your GIS project in the metadata form, you can log in to view/edit your entry details or add another GIS project.

2) Complete the poster or web based project requirements below.

Poster Requirements:

Posters must be submitted and printed by Tuesday, May 7th, 2024 to be included in the GIS Expo.

  • Print your poster at the Tisch Data Lab when a Lab Assistant is working, at least 1 day before the event. (Note: There is no cost for printing for the GIS Expo.)
  • Posters should be made at 30 x 40in (portrait or landscape).
  • If you are not located on the Medford Campus, Carolyn Talmadge can help get your poster printed if you reach out to her.

Web Project Requirements:

Web Based projects must be submitted by Sunday, May 5th, 2024 to be included in the judging and GIS Expo.

  • If you are submitting an ESRI Application such as a StoryMap, Dashboard, Instant App, or other type of web based project, please update the projects sharing permissions to public (with Everyone) in ArcGIS Online so it is accessible.
  • Please note that with web based projects, you can continue to edit and build your application after submitting the project. However, we need to have access to a link and know who is submitting web-based projects, as the digital set up is more involved than the poster setup.
