About the Palo Alto Art Center

The Palo Alto Art Center provides an accessible and welcoming place
where the community engages with art. The Center¹s mission is to foster
creative process and thought by forging a greater appreciation and
understanding of the visual arts through exhibitions, studio
experiences, and related educational programs. The Art Center believes
that this is best achieved by connecting the experience of viewing art
with a direct involvement in making art. The Art Center serves
approximately 70,000 people every year through a diverse range of
programs.

Currently, the Palo Alto Art Center is undergoing a substantial $7.9
million transformation of its facilities, expected to be complete in
fall 2012. During the transformation, local residents are participating
in the Art Center¹s innovative On the Road programs, which bring the
Center¹s popular and acclaimed ³see and make² approach to the arts
directly into the community.

Children¹s Fine Art

Children¹s Fine Art is the Palo Alto Art Center¹s afterschool and summer
studio art program for children ages 18 months to 18 years, serving
approximately 1500 children each year. Classes are offered in all media,
including ceramics, drawing, and painting, as well as in specialized
arts, such as tinkering, fashion design, and Japanese brush painting.

The Children¹s Fine Art Coordinator oversees the day to day running of
the program‹supporting art instructors, communicating with participating
families, and fulfilling various administrative tasks‹to ensure high
quality art education experiences.  He/she also works to improve the
quality of the program by being responsible for publicizing classes and
workshops and evaluating the programs ongoing needs.

Under limited supervision, performs highly specialized jobs in support
of performing and visual arts.  Examples would include exhibit design
and installation, graphic design, theater scene, costume and lighting
design and direction, studio supervision, etc.

Responsibilities

Communicate with art instructors and parents on all levels of program
Support art instructors in all areas of the program
Oversee all administrative aspects of the program
Administer art instructor contracts and pay instructors
Create and implement publicity plan for program
Create and implement research and evaluation plan for program
Assist with hiring of artists and interns
Work collaboratively with the Education team to plan and implement
programming that is consistent with the mission of the department
Work with Director of Education to determine schedule and location of
classes and to write class descriptions for Enjoy! Catalogue
Purchase art supplies and maintain art studios when necessary
Additional duties as needed

Skills:

Excellent oral communication skills
Flexibility, ability to self-start, and a passion for the arts and/or
creative endeavors
Time management, prioritization and organization skills
Ability to work independently
Computer skills in word processing, data entry, email and internet
research

Potential Candidates Must Have:

Experience working with children, including developing and teaching art
activities
Skills in organizing and implementing arts education programs, including
hiring staff, managing marketing and publicity strategies, and
developing curriculum
Bachelor¹s Degree in fine arts, humanities, or education; master¹s in
fine arts, art education, non-profit administration, or museum studies
is preferred
Valid driver¹s license
Ability to lift up to 50 pounds

Gallery Administrator/Volunteer [Belmont Gallery of Art]

The Gallery Committee of the Belmont Gallery of Art seeks an enthusiastic and qualified volunteer for the position of Gallery Administrator.  The position offers valuable experience to be gained while managing a rising non-profit community visual art gallery, now entering its 6th year of operation.

Description:   The Gallery Administrator reports to the Gallery Committee and is responsible for managing day-to-day operations while overseeing organizational and operational needs with the Gallery Committee. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: coordinate regular meetings with Gallery Committee; oversee gallery shows (planning, installation and implementation), promotion (coordinated with Publicist and artists, includes print and electronic media, publications, mailings), hospitality (receptions and events), and gallery sitters; maintain liaison with Town Administrator, Treasurer, Accountant, and Building Services Manager; and develop community outreach through volunteers and partnerships within the community.

This is a volunteer position requiring flexible hours ranging from approximately three to ten hours per week. As the organization does not maintain a physical office at the gallery, the successful candidate will perform responsibilities online with a flexible schedule. Onsite presence is required for meetings, installation, events, etc.

Qualifications:    The candidate should possess a special combination of personal and professional attributes, including strong communication and social skills, mature judgment, sensitivity to issues of the gallery’s setting within the community, and demonstrated creativity, initiative, and work ethic. Deep interest in visual, language, and media arts is a valuable asset in the position. Successful volunteer or paid work experience in arts administration, community development, studio arts, or business management is desirable.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art

The Metropolitan Museum of Art, one of the world’s finest museums, is
seeking an Assistant/Associate Museum Educator in the Education
Department.

The Assistant/Associate Museum Educator strategically plans, implements,
and evaluates programs that directly and imaginatively engage a diverse
range of adults with works of art at the Metropolitan Museum of Art
through gallery-based experiences. The Educator reports to the Managing
Museum Educator for Gallery and Studio Programs and, alongside Educators
for Teen, Family, and Access and Community programs, contributes
essential leadership to the Gallery and Studio Programs Division.

With a keen grasp of The Met’s unique strengths and the landscape of
offerings in the New York City area, the Educator creates and executes
innovative programs that advance the Museum’s goals and are relevant to
current and new audiences. To accomplish this, s/he analyzes
opportunities and needs, collaboratively curates each season of
programs, develops teaching strategies and formats, staffs and
implements activities, and evaluates programs with an eye to the
alignment of resources and impact. The Educator develops and experiments
with techniques to support learning, including strategically using new
media tools within programs to heighten their benefit and/or reach. The
Educator recruits, trains, and manages contractual and guest educators
as necessary and in alignment with the Museum’s goals. The Educator also
administers programs, executes logistics, develops and maintains annual
budgets, and meets reporting requirements.

The Assistant/Associate Museum Educator will initially be responsible
for a daily schedule of gallery talks led by staff and contractual
educators which draw approximately 17,000 participants each year. The
Educator is expected to evaluate and transform the current program,
diversifying its offerings to broaden the Museum’s audiences and better
meet The Met’s priorities as well as the interests and learning styles
of the Museum’s many visitors. The position requires a command of art
history; a demonstrated track record of innovative and successful
programming for diverse audiences; an interest in adults as learners;
strong administrative skills; and excellent interpersonal skills,
including the ability to appropriately communicate, collaborate, and
negotiate with a range of stakeholders.

Primary Responsibilities and Duties:

*        Creatively and strategically plan and implement compelling
programs that engage a diverse range of adults with works of art at the
Met.

*        Develop a seasonal schedule of adult and intergenerational
programs in collaboration with Education, Curatorial, and other Museum
staff.

*        Identify target audiences and potential partners, produce
succinct and compelling content for print and online materials, and
working with numerous Museum departments, promote programs within the
building, virtually, and offsite.

*        Hire, train, supervise, and mentor museum educators who are
contracted to lead adult programs, regularly assessing their teaching;
as appropriate, hire guest presenters who bring unique insights to the
Museum’s collections and exhibitions, broadening the perspectives the
Museum offers its visitors.

*        Work closely with colleagues in Education, Digital Media,
Curatorial, Conservation, External Relations, Visitor Services, and
other departments to plan and execute programs.

*        Oversee and implement program logistics and budgets; this
includes handling the administrative and financial requirements of those
contracted to lead activities, providing logistical support for each
event, guiding volunteers who assist with programs, and accurately
reporting statistics.

*        Work with other Education and Museum staff members and/or
outside consultants to shape evaluation/assessment tools and techniques,
and find impactful ways to disseminate findings within the Met, as well
as nationally and internationally.

*        Work closely with other Education and Development staff to
draft program proposals and reports for funding agencies, Trustees and
donors, partners, and government stakeholders.

*        Teach periodically, including leading or co-facilitating
training sessions for volunteers, professional development sessions for
peers, and gallery-based programs for a range of general audiences
groups.

*        Other related duties as assigned.

Requirements:

The successful candidate will possess a Master’s degree in Art History,
Fine Arts, Museum Studies, Education, or other relevant fields in the
humanities or social sciences as well as a minimum 4 years of experience
in program development, with a minimum of 1 year experience programming
for adult learners. Qualifications include a proven track record of
developing, implementing, and evaluating high quality, innovative
programs using original works of art in a museum setting and attracting
broad and diverse audiences; demonstrated knowledge of art history and
of current museum-based pedagogy, including an awareness of how digital
tools can be used to support teaching and learning; demonstrable
experience teaching in a museum environment; demonstrable experience in
maintaining key collaborative relationships in planning, negotiation,
and/or budgeting within a cultural institution; experience managing
budgets and administrative functions, in addition to exceptional
organizational skills; evidence of excellent interpersonal skills,
including the ability to communicate with diverse stakeholders
appropriately and strategically, verbally and in writing, using formal
and informal vehicles; supervisory experience; and command of Microsoft
Office Suite 2007/2010 (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)-familiarity
with Microsoft Access 2007/2010 preferred.
