GENERAL SUMMARY

Supports the exhibitions department and exhibition teams as assigned (curatorial, interpretation, publications, design, exhibitions) in developing and implementing exhibitions at the DIA.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Conducts collection research, formats loan letters, and assists with lender follow-up
  • Researches, obtains images and rights and reproduction for catalogue and interpretation
  • Tracks information for interpretive planning, exhibition design, and installation
  • Assists with archiving scholarship and image database
  • Proficient with FileMaker Pro and input information related to loans, collectors, interpretation
  • Helps  maintain working relationships and communications with external partners and customers
  • Coordinates community consultations / record and document sessions
  • Tracks and assists with all aspects of catalogue including: facilitate donor, scholar, and lender input, fact checking, assistance with artist bios, captions, credits and indexing
  • Coordinate meetings with internal and external partners, especially for interpretive purposes
  • Other tasks as assigned

 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in Art History with additional graduate work
  • Minimum of one year experience in the field of art
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Familiarity with the activities and operation of a large art museum
  • Tact in dealing with the public and staff
  • Knowledge of MS Office, especially FileMaker Pro

Description of Work:
Salary range augmented with anticipated private organization funding to reflect hiring range. State benefits are based only on the salary range of $56,393 – $94,037.00. Salary grade pending OSP approval in BEACON.The Director provides overall leadership and museum management of Tryon Palace. The Director is responsible for the daily activities of permanent, temporary staff and volunteer staff. Duties include oversight of the preservation of historic buildings and artifacts, safety of staff, visitors and contractors; collections management and historic interpretation; exhibits development and planning; infrastructure and building maintenance, preservation and maintenance of archival and library collections; security of all building objects; operational oversight of the museum store; accounting services, forecasting and reporting; institutional research; fundraising; membership growth; special events planning; public relations and community outreach.

Position responsibilities include marketing and promotion; internal and external meeting planning, assessment and application of human resource policies and practices and overall administrative support to the Tryon Palace Commission, the Tryon Palace Council of Friends and the Kellenberger Historical Foundation. Also community outreach and networking with various organizations, such as tourism, and other professional organizations. This position is a bridge-builder across many constituents, including local citizenry, community, and the NC General Assembly. Duties as otherwise assigned by the Deputy Secretary or Secretary.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
The Director must have strong leadership and management skills and be able to interact successfully with diverse groups and individuals. This position requires outstanding listening and communication skills and the ability to promote, establish and maintain partnerships and consensus. The Director position requires excellent organizational skills and familiarity with group dynamics and meeting facilitation. The Director must have a keen awareness and interest in history, education, decorative arts and material culture.

Networking, Diplomacy, Collaborative, Flexible, Persuasive, Detail Focused and Leadership are all competencies or job characteristics required to be successful as the Director.

Training and Experience Requirements:
A Masters or Doctorate degree in a liberal arts discipline is required preferably in History or Material Culture with five years of progressive experience in management or administration of a public history agency. The position requires training or experience in business management and knowledge of organizational theory and practices.

Alternative: A Bachelor’s degree in History or a related subject with at least eight years of progressive and outstanding administrative role in a public history agency may offset the primary education and experience requirement.

This position requires skills in the use of Microsoft Office suite software (Word, PowerPoint, and Excel) and familiarity with computer applications in diverse areas of the operation. This position also requires extensive skills in public speaking, writing, persuasiveness and creativity. Must have excellent planning skills and the ability to understand financial management, financial reports and accounting standards, policies and practices. The desired applicant should have demonstrated experience and proven success in fundraising and development, including experience in attaining significant gifts in the $100K to $1M range. Director must have experience/understanding of the process of developing and maintaining donor prospect base, relationship building and knowledge of dealing with high-level corporate/foundation/individual donors.

Director of the Visitor Experience [The Discovery Museums]

Preservation Services Manager, Southern New England [Historic New England]

Location: Lyman Estate, Waltham, Mass.

Description: The Preservation Services Manager, Northern New England, monitors approximately half of the properties enrolled within Historic New England’s easement program to ensure compliance with preservation and conservation restrictions. This position responds to public inquiries about easements, researches and identifies prospective easement properties, makes internal and public presentations about our easement efforts, and generally assists in the organization’s efforts to protect additional significant historic properties through this mechanism. This position is also responsible for serving as a local preservation resource or advocate, including responding to public inquiries, assisting with local preservation efforts, and observing and monitoring general preservation issues within the assigned region of responsibility.

Responsibilities: Conducts annual visits to easement properties to ensure compliance with conservation and preservation restrictions. Visits easement properties during repair or rehabilitation projects to document the work and confirm the methods and materials used for repairs. Fosters and develops positive working relationships with property owners to improve overall compliance. The Preservation Services Manager also assists easement property owners in anticipating maintenance and repairs that might affect protected features, maintains documentation of discussions with property owners throughout the year for the purpose of creating a legal record between Historic New England and the property owner, and reviews requests for approval of repairs or alterations to stewardship properties as well as monitors property insurance requirements. The Preservation Services Manager is also responsible for preparing and presenting public presentations on our easement program and efforts to protect privately-owned historic homes. Working with the team leader, this position will also be responsible for identifying preservation issues, responding to local preservation inquiries, and serving as a local preservation resource within their assigned region.

Qualifications: Requires a bachelor’s degree in historic preservation, art history, or architectural history with at least two (2) years of job-related experience. Master’s degree in those fields listed above is preferred. Requires computer skills including word processing, spreadsheet, and PowerPoint use. Basic photography skills are required, as are a valid driver’s license, personal automobile, and the ability to travel.

Membership Coordinator [Historic New England – Otis House]

Description: Historic New England seeks to add a skilled, high-energy, and personable individual to its dynamic nine-member development team. Reporting to the Vice President for Advancement, the Membership Coordinator will be responsible for maintaining the Raiser’s Edge database, including data hygiene; creating queries, exports, and reports; and assigning and tracking appeals, solicitations, and donor and prospect attributes.

The Membership Coordinator will serve as a vital front-line customer service ambassador, responding to phone calls, e-mails, and correspondence from staff, members, and the general public, and helping to promote membership at Historic New England special events, many of which are on weekends.

Responsibilities: She/he will be responsible for the preparation of monthly membership performance reports and will oversee and participate in the gift processing and membership acknowledgment processes, producing weekly gift acknowledgment letters, membership cards, and other appropriate membership fulfillment materials in a timely manner.

This position will be based at Otis House until early in 2013 after which time the Membership Coordinator will work out of Historic New England’s Haverhill office, which is conveniently located across the street from an MBTA commuter rail stop.

Qualifications: The ideal candidate will be proficient in Raiser’s Edge and have a bachelor’s degree with a minimum of two years of job-related experience. This valued member of the development team should be personable, well-organized, and detail-oriented, and possess superior word processing, spreadsheet, and e-mail management skills.
