The Director of Education (DOE) reports to the Executive Director and is responsible for the management of the Museum’s Education Department. Principal responsibilities include the development and implementation of programs, events and activities which educate and involve community members, school groups and the general public and encourage participation in and contributions to the Museum and its mission; in coordination with the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE), developing and keeping current the African American curriculum to be taught in Maryland public schools. The DOE will act as the museum’s representative and liaison to Maryland school districts. Through the museum’s preservation of African American culture and history, the DOE will be responsible for a variety of learning experiences and will be influential in the shaping of the museum’s educational goals and objectives and its innovative exhibits and programming.

Primary Responsibilities

Responsible for all aspects of educational programming, including research, strategic planning, visitor advocacy, presentations and publications, and promoting, developing, implementing, and assessing the Museum’s educational programs and projects.

Manages the Education Department staff and budget.

In consultation with the museum’s Board of Directors and Executive Director, formulates museum education policies and philosophy.

Manages and promotes the MSDE/Museum Partnership with guidance from the Education Task Force, including monitoring the use of the curriculum and ensuring the lessons are current.

Establishes effective working relationships with Maryland school systems’ curriculum and instructional administrators and subject area supervisors to ensure the awareness and use of the curriculum in classrooms statewide.

Works with MSDE and local school systems to boost attendance.

Manages projects in two major areas – School and Teacher Programs and Public Programs.

In consultation with the Curator and other museum staff, develops exhibition-related and education programs for children and adults which fulfill the mission of the museum.

Compiles various monthly and annual reports detailing department activities.

Outreach:

Manages volunteer program.

Establishes and maintains strong relationships with Maryland schools.

Creates partnerships with museums, universities, other agencies and businesses, Maryland school systems and community organizations to develop and promote joint programming.

Exhibitions:

Works with the Curator and education staff to develop education programs as adjunct to exhibitions and assists with preparation of gallery guides and catalogues.

Provides group tours of the exhibitions.

Marketing/PR:

Assists the Marketing Director with the preparation of the overall marketing plan.

With assistance from the Marketing Director, maintains a visible presence in the local, state and national professional community by presenting information about the museum’s educational programs and establishing communication and information exchange with other organizations implementing exemplary programs.

In conjunction with the Marketing Department, helps to promote all activities at the museum with special emphasis on the Education Department and its programs.

Works with the Marketing Director to write and produce schedules and articles on education programs for newspapers, other publications and museum publications.

Works with the Marketing Director to provide local radio and TV stations with information and appear, as necessary, on shows with information regarding education events.

Fundraising:

In consultation with the Director of Development, seeks funding sources for education programs; consults with Director on strategies to fund existing and new programs.

Assists with writing grants for education programs.

Job Requirements
Qualifications:

Must be a creative and collaborative leader with supervisory experience; a minimum of 8 years experience in education, including at least 4 years in a public education setting as a teacher, department chair, assistant principal, principal, or subject area supervisor; an M.A. Degree in education or history; Doctorate preferred. Familiarity/experience in museum educational programming is desirable but, not required. Salary to commensurate with experience. State benefits.
