The Director/Chief Curator leads all activities directly related to the GRAMMY Museum Mississippi collection and exhibitions and assumes the lead role in the carrying out the organization’s mission, vision, strategic plan, and budget. The Director/Chief Curator will also advise on all marketing, sponsorship, development, external business affairs and promotional programs. He/she will coordinate with and act as the primary liaison between the Cleveland Music Foundation, Delta State University and The GRAMMY Museum Foundation.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

•Work with the GRAMMY Museum Foundation and Cleveland Music Foundation to establish protocol, policy and procedures for the successful operation of the GRAMMY Museum Mississippi

•Create and translate the mission of the GRAMMY Museum Mississippi to the organization’s partners and funders as well as the general public

•Produce compelling programs as a way to connect and engage potential partners

•Brand the organization and create interest in its mission and goals

•Cultivate ongoing relationships with Cleveland Music Foundation Board of Directors, GRAMMY Museum Foundation and its Board of Directors, Delta State University, community stakeholders, major partners, government agencies, and other associates to secure financial, community, collections, and operations support

•Prioritize both short and long-term goals for the organization

•Create opportunities to maintain the overall sustainability of the organization including acting as the main fundraiser

•Work with the Development Manager to cultivate major gifts and stewardship, individual giving and foundation and government grants

•Oversee and implement budgets and the policies and procedures related to the overall administration, governance, and operations

•Promote an internal culture in which stewardship and cultivation are understood to be an important element of every staff member’s work

•Develop and implement permanent exhibitions for the GRAMMY Museum Mississippi, including but not limited to: story research, selection, and improvement; interpretive and other content planning; design feedback; asset procurement (objects, film, photos, music); development of traveling exhibitions; ongoing refresh of permanent galleries; lead public programming in support of exhibitions

SUPPORTIVE FUNCTIONS:

In addition to performance of the essential functions, this position will be required to perform a combination of the following supportive functions:

•Hold basic knowledge of development practices including grant writing; capital campaigns; individual donor giving; planned giving and corporate sponsorship

•Knowledgeable about the region and state’s musical heritage, connection to the GRAMMY Awards and its relevant cultural and social impact

•Possess strong verbal and written communication skill

•Act as spokesperson to all external audiences, including media

•Liaise with other museum professionals and outside agencies, through meetings and collaborative projects.

•Proven ability to work as a valued part of a larger team, and to interface diplomatically with both internal and external partners

•Proven and exhaustive knowledge of the region’s musical heritage and have capacity for telling larger stories of social, popular, and technological history

•Current knowledge of best practices in exhibition and interpretive design, informal public education, and public issues facing the larger cultural community

•Comfortable modeling and enforcing cultural institution best practices in collection management

•Ability to maintain the confidentiality of highly sensitive information

•Proficiency with Microsoft Office Products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)

QUALIFICATION STANDARDS

Education

Bachelor’s degree required. Masters of Administration, MBA or MA in museum studies, library/information science, and/or a field directly related to the Museum’s collections and mission (American History, Music, Education) strongly preferred.

Experience

At least 7-10 years of progressively responsible professional experience in informal public education or interpretation; at least two these being within a collections-based institution such as a museum, library, or archive. Proven fundraising skills and budget & management skills is a must.
