This position, which plays a leading role in efforts to connect onsite and online users with Carnegie Museum of Natural History (CMNH)’s rich content and experiences, offers an opportunity to have a lasting impact on the museum and the region’s cultural and economic development. As a member of the museum’s senior leadership team, the director of marketing provides an audience-centric perspective to the museum’s director and senior managers. S/he develops and implements marketing and communications plans for CMNH and works closely with the director of marketing for the contiguous Carnegie Museum of Art (CMOA) to increase participation and awareness and drive revenue generation. S/he oversees advertising, branding, media relations, social media, and the museum’s website and provides motivational leadership for the department’s team. S/he also liaises with counterparts from other Carnegie Museums and central service departments to ensure consistent messaging and increase visibility for the organization as a whole.

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:
Marketing, communications, and public relations
• Create and implement a marketing program to increase visitation and participation and revenue generation; maintain a positive image; and raise awareness of the museum regionally, nationally, and internationally. Evaluate results and make adjustments as needed.
• Proactively seek ways to engage new audiences, including reflecting CMP strategic goals for inclusion, accessibility, and diversity in marketing and outreach.
• With CMNH’s communications and media manager, establish and fulfill goals for enhancing awareness of the museum’s activities through a variety of print, broadcast, and electronic media channels. Lead or contribute to crisis management efforts as appropriate.
• Oversee the museum’s website and social media efforts.
• Implement and disseminate results of marketing research to promote understanding of audiences and guide decision-making.
• Manage the museum’s brand identity and work closely with CMOA counterpart to ensure brands are used accurately and effectively.
• Collaborate with Development and Corporate Sponsorship to prepare sponsorship proposals and fulfill requirements.
• Oversee image licensing and rights and reproductions, including fee negotiation and contract development.
Planning and collaboration
• Provide an audience-centric perspective to the museum’s director and senior managers in all aspects of planning and operations.
• Collaborate with curatorial, education, exhibitions, public programs, and auxiliary service staff across CMNH and CMOA to coordinate audience engagement initiatives, maximize revenue generation, and achieve economies of scale.
• Liaise with counterparts from other Carnegie Museums and central components to ensure consistent messaging and increase visibility for the organization as a whole.
• Staff marketing task forces and serve on other task forces and/or committees as required.
• Collaborate with nonprofit and profit organizations throughout the region to develop and implement innovative promotional efforts that contribute to tourism and economic development and amplify Pittsburgh’s reputation as one of America’s most livable cities.
Management and budgeting
• Select, train, motivate, and supervise staff to ensure effective operations and successful implementation of the strategies articulated in the marketing and communication plans.
• Develop and track annual and project marketing budgets. Contribute to overall budgeting efforts to ensure alignment of aspirations and resources.
• Participate in professional development and networking opportunities to understand and share best practices in marketing and museums regionally, nationally, and internationally.

Job Requirements
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: The candidate must have a Bachelor’s degree and at least seven years of increasingly responsible marketing experience, including supervising staff and budgets.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: The candidate must have a nuanced understanding of the values of a mission-driven organization. Nonprofit marketing experience is desirable. The ideal candidate will possess superior oral and written communication skills, along with knowledge of advertising, budgeting, design, marketing research/evaluation, media relations, and strategic marketing planning, including best practices. An understanding of the role of electronic media in reaching general and targeted audiences is essential. Must have strong interpersonal and supervisory skills, including being able to motivate and manage individuals from a variety of backgrounds in a team-oriented environment. Flexibility and the ability to juggle multiple competing priorities are critical to success. General knowledge of contracts and intellectual property guidelines is preferred.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Work is primarily sedentary in nature. Some local travel is required, along with flexibility to work on occasional evenings/weekends.
