The Amon Carter Museum of American Art and Texas Christian University invite applications for a shared three-year postdoctoral Curatorial and Faculty Fellow in the History of Photography, to begin July 1, 2015. ABD required; PhD. Preferred.
The successful candidate will work half-time with the Senior Curator of Photographs at the Amon Carter Museum, and, in collaboration with other museum staff, on activities relating to the presentation and interpretation of the museum’s photography collection with special scholarly emphasis on its six artist archives. The candidate will teach three classes each year in art history, serve on MA thesis committees (as needed), and attend art history divisional meetings at Texas Christian University. The fellow will represent the museum and the university and their missions to museum members, students, and the public at large. The position includes full benefits.

POSITION DESCRIPTION
Position: Curatorial and Faculty Fellow in the History of Photography
Reports to: Amon Carter Museum of American Art Senior Curator of Photographs and Texas Christian University Art History Division Coordinator and School of Art Director

Classification: Three-Year Temporary Position; Non-Tenure Track
Work with the Senior Curator of Photographs at the Amon Carter Museum of American Art (ACMAA), and in collaboration with other museum staff on activities relating to the presentation and interpretation of the museum’s photography collection with special scholarly emphasis on its six artist archives. Teach classes, serve on MA thesis committees (as needed), and attend art history divisional meetings at Texas Christian University (TCU). Represent the museum and the university and their missions to museum members, students, and the public at large.
Responsibilities
- Organize and present permanent collection exhibitions in collaboration with a cross-departmental team, from inception to installation, including conceptual outline, selection of objects, research, writing, interpretation, and implementation with special attention to recent acquisitions and rarely displayed works
- Teach three classes each year at TCU (generally two and one), including the general Introduction to Art History, the History of Photography, and a specialized upper-level undergraduate course and/or graduate seminar built on applicant’s area of expertise and using the museum’s holdings; courses to be coordinated with TCU and the museum.
- Develop and upgrade illustrated introductions to key subcomponents of the museum’s photography collection for presentation on the museum’s web site.
- Prepare for publication a significant scholarly article based on one of the museum’s six artist archives that moves beyond a retrospective or biographical treatment.
- Lecture on the ACMAA photography collection, including gallery talks, docent training, and outreach presentations.
- Attend the art history faculty’s divisional meetings. Serve as necessary on student committees and MA thesis committees.
- Assist with general museum curatorial outreach activities as needed including, but not limited to, fielding outside inquiries; assisting outside researchers; and conducting tours for special groups and individuals.
- Assist with general museum internal curatorial activities as needed, including, but not limited to, conducting object cataloguing; drafting acquisition proposals; assisting with the drafting of annual budgets; and assisting with oversight of interns and volunteers.
- Participate in pertinent professional organizations; present papers, and publish as time permits.
- Maintain confidentiality regarding all sensitive museum and TCU information.
- Other duties as needed.
Qualifications
- Advanced degree in art history with specialization in the history of photography, and scholarly focus on American photography before 1970; ABD required; Ph.D. preferred.
- Advanced knowledge of research methods in American art and photography.
- Experience teaching at the university level.
- Record of published scholarship and/or public presentations on photographic topics.
- Minimum of one year curatorial experience with American photography collection.
- Knowledge of theoretical and standard museum practices.
- Knowledge of preservation practices; familiarity with conservation practices; experience handling photographs from all time periods.
- Proven ability to manage projects and meet deadlines; highly developed organizational and interpersonal skills.
- Proven ability to balance teaching load and museum duties.
- Experience with cataloguing works of art and automated collection management systems.
- Demonstrated writing ability for general and scholarly audiences.
- Demonstrated computer, editing, and proofreading skills.
- Demonstrated public speaking skills.
