Duties & Responsibilities

The Natural History Gallery of the Museums and Exhibits component of the King Abdulaziz Center will be a highly interactive, object-based, multimedia environment exploring the natural history of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in all of its diversity. It will be a gateway to the natural landscape for the visitors to the Center. The gallery will form an experiential connection between the past and the future within a uniquely designed building located in the Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia.
The Program Developer Curator oversees the development of the Museums & Exhibits’ natural history gallery and generates new exhibition content for the gallery while engaging audiences with content from Saudi Arabia and the Middle East. The Curator will engage with the Head of Museums & Exhibits and colleagues across the Center to ensure that content in the gallery integrates current practices in natural science, history, culture, and public interpretation. The Natural History Curator will be recognized as an active leader in the field within the Kingdom and the GCC.
The program developer will work within the Culture & Creativity Division, which consists of a four gallery museum, the great hall, the children’s museum, performing arts and the multimedia theater.
This Division is part of King Abdulaziz Center for World Culture, which is a 21st Century iconic cultural facility that is multi-disciplinary, combining art and science with a mission focusing on advancing knowledge, creativity and cross-cultural engagement.

– Identify objects and subject matter to generate public and scholarly discourse on the natural history of Saudi Arabia for consideration in regional and global contexts.

– Provide advice and consent on collection matters related to natural history collections and exhibits within the Center.

– Advise and propose to management exhibit proposals and concepts for special exhibitions. – Cultivate professional networks related to the natural history museum field within Saudi Arabia and the GCC.

– Coordinate symposia and workshops across the Center to foster public engagement with natural sciences and natural history through museums.

– Manage the coordination of content review and the approval process for gallery spaces and associated publications for public use (gallery guides, web interface, way-finding, and others.)

– Create exhibitions raising awareness about the natural environment in Saudi Arabia. – Collaborate with Museums & Exhibits, Performing Arts, Multimedia, Library, and Archives staff to develop programs in support of exhibitions on natural history.

Job Requirements

Minimum Requirements Qualifications:

– Exhibition development, natural history, curatorial practice, writing, public speaking, informal science education, public history.

Fluent English. Preference for Arabic fluency in addition to English.
Education

– Minimum requirement: Master’s degree in a preferred major (see above); Ph.D. preferred.
Certification – Optional museum studies certification.
Experience specified:

– Minimum of 5 years of experience as a curator in a museum or equivalent publicly accessible setting.

Candidate will have researched, organized, and overseen the production of the following: Medium to large sized exhibitions, exhibition catalog(s) and/or essays in scholarly journals, online, or other recognized natural history and/or museum publications of note. Must have at least 3 years of experience managing a staff, budgeting, and planning in a museum context.
