The Southern Museum of Civil War and Locomotive History in Kennesaw, Georgia is currently seeking an energetic and experienced individual for the position of Archivist. The Southern Museum, located 22 miles north of downtown Atlanta, is part of the prestigious Smithsonian Affiliations Program and includes Civil War and railroad exhibitions, an early 20th century replica locomotive factory, a library/archive, and the Jolley Education Center. Construction is nearing completion of an 8,700 square feet facility that will be incorporated into a new Research Center for the Museum. The Archivist will play a key role in organizing, promoting, and overseeing the new Research Center. The Archivist reports to the Executive Director and will primarily work a Tuesday through Saturday schedule.
Job Requirements
Principal responsibilities include processing and accessioning collections, preparing archival items for storage, producing finding-aids, developing components of travelling photographic exhibitions, and providing support for activities associated with in-house and loan exhibitions. The ability to successfully participate within a team environment is a must as the Archivist will work closely with the Curator in planning and implementing collections policies, exhibits, and procedures. Interaction with researchers and managing the archival volunteers are further responsibilities of this position. The incumbent must possess excellent communication skills (verbal and written) and have significant experience in archival management, Past Perfect, digitization, document and image preservation, and grant writing. Incumbent will be knowledgeable of Civil War, Reconstruction, and southeast industrial/ railroad history. The ideal candidate will possess a master’s degree in museum studies, history, library science, or related field along with a minimum of three years of museum experience (a bachelor’s degree with five or more years of demonstrated archival experience will also be considered). This is a city government position with a starting salary of $44,000 to $48,000 and excellent benefits. Candidates may be eligible for partial relocation expenses.
