The Corning Museum of Glass (CMoG) strives to tell the story of American glass production from the 18th century to the present. The Museum will embark on an ambitious curatorial project focused on the Museum’s comprehensive collection of American brilliant-cut and engraved glass objects dating from 1870 to 1940. Completion of new and needed research, documentation, and photography will critically enhance knowledge of the collection and provide accessible information for CMoG staff, the public, researchers, and other museums through future digitization initiatives. With generous support from the Henry Luce Foundation, CMoG will hire two 12-month positions in the curatorial and photography departments to complete this documentation phase of the project.

Responsibilities:

The Luce Curatorial Assistant will work with the curator of American glass, archivist and special collections librarians, exhibitions team, conservator, photography department, scholars, and collectors to research and verify documentation of CMoG’s collection of American cut and engraved glass. The curatorial assistant will update records, as well as compose brief descriptions and histories of the objects for curatorial review and submission into Museum database, and ultimately for a digital guide to the collection. He or she will work with the Rakow Research Library to identify correlating archival resources and compile bibliographies on manufacturers and designers. The curatorial assistant will work to create a priority list for objects to be photographed and researched in depth. Additional duties may include working with collectors and scholars, developing new installation plans, and label writing.

Qualifications:

The ideal candidate will be a graduate student or recent graduate with a Master’s Degree in an applicable field, such as Decorative Arts, Art History, Museum Studies or History. A prior knowledge of American decorative arts and/or glass will be considered an important asset in candidate selection. Candidates with undergraduate degrees and museum experience will be considered.

The curatorial assistant is expected to have excellent research skills, the ability to write clearly and concisely, strong attention to detail, and to work independently. Good organizational skills and ability to communicate efficiently are essential. He or she should possess outstanding computer skills (particularly with Excel) and knowledge of library special collections research. Collections database experience (MIMSY) is preferred.

This position requires knowledge of generally accepted curatorial practices and procedures pertaining to handling, documenting, housing and storing museum and library collections.

Compensation:
