Job Description
Rollins College is currently seeking a Lead Preparator to join the Cornell Fine Arts Museum. The Lead Preparator is part of the curatorial team at the Cornell and works to ensure the care and proper display of the permanent collection at the museum and The Alfond Inn, as well as all temporary exhibitions. You will manage all installations with primary responsibility for their security, care and design, and oversees the physical spaces where the collection is stored and displayed. The Lead Preparator serves as primary liaison with the staff of The Alfond Inn and with Facilities on campus. This position reports to the Curator.
Essential Functions:
Planning and overseeing installation of exhibitions and permanent displays at the Cornell Fine Arts Museum, The Alfond Inn, and traveling exhibitions:
• Working with the Curator and Collections & Exhibitions Manager on planning, exhibition design, and implementation of all installations.
• Overseeing installation schedule and labor, including supplies, packing and shipping, etc.
• Managing process of exhibition didactics design and production.
• Organizing photography of installations and objects for records and publications.
Overseeing the physical spaces where the collection is stored and displayed:
• Monitoring and improving design, display, and collections care of installations at hotel and museum; actively managing the Alfond Collection through weekly condition checks.
• Functioning as liaison with Facilities and Alfond Inn staff regarding any needs for the collection and installations.
• Working with Alfond Inn staff to establish security and care procedures for the collection as well as share information about additions to the collection etc.
• Regular consultations with framers, conservators, and the creation of condition reports of objects in the collection.
• Organizing the care for art displayed on campus; vault and Lawrence Center storage upkeep.
• Other responsibilities as assigned by the Curator or Director.
Job Requirements
Qualifications:
- College degree (in art, museum studies or art history) and at least 5 years of related experience is required.
- Tested art handling and project managing skills.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to multi-task, prioritize and work under deadline.
- Ability to work cooperatively as part of a team.
- Ability to serve as a liaison to other departments on campus and the Alfond Inn.
