BASIC JOB FUNCTION
Under the direction of the Chief Marketing and Communications Officer, the Design Director will lead the institution wide brand re-fresh created by Pentagram. He/She will design print and electronic material that positions NYBG as a contemporary and first-class living museum, ensure compliance with new brand standards and oversee the Creative Services team in design and execution of institutional and seasonal communications.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities
• Work closely with the Chief Marketing and Communications Offer to strategize, develop, maintain, and evolve the new NYBG brand identity system while promoting the integrity of the NYBG brand
• Oversee the work and workflow of the design team, and between NYBG departments, ensuring that projects are delivered at a high quality, on time , and on budget
• Direct the design and production of all external-facing communication programs, including but not limited to publication, brochures, invitation, exhibition graphics, advertising and institutional identity components
• Develop new materials and kits for the fundraising operation of the Garden to elevate the institutional identity and attract new donors while maximizing the effectiveness of the communication vehicles
• Provide leadership to design team, fostering an inspiring and collaborative work environment
• Identify and oversee outside creative partnerships with outside vendors, including but not limited to photographers, design studios and freelancers, printers, and fabricators
• Remain current in arts and design, culture, and technology

Job Requirements
REQUIREMENTS
• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in graphic design
• A minimum of 7 years of work experience in the field of graphic design and/or branding, including proven team management and presentation skills
• An outstanding portfolio that includes customer facing creative materials as well as institutional communications
• An affinity in arts and culture/cultural institutions a must
• Excellent communication skills with the ability to translate between design and logistics
• Fluent with software packages, including Adobe InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, PowerPoint and Microsoft Office
• Attention to detail, with strong organizational, project management, and multi-tasking skills
• Strong knowledge of conventional and digital print processes, retouching, print production, press checking and vendor file preparation
• General understanding of web and digital platforms
