Manager of School & Teacher Programs

The James A. Michener Art Museum, a private non-profit organization with a $3 million operating budget seeks a full-time Manager of School and Teacher Programs to become part of a dynamic and growing Education Department program.

 

The Manager of School and Teacher Programs reports to the Senior Director of Programs and is responsible for developing onsite and offsite education programs that meet the needs of PreK-12 school students, teachers, and homeschool audiences. The Manager of School and Teacher Programs enables the success of education programs through the creation of content, supporting curriculum materials for both exhibitions and collections, project management and budgeting duties, and work with volunteer docents and adjunct staff.

The Manager is a leader in the field and a primary resource for students and teachers, incorporating all subject areas in programmatic offerings and materials, and will serve as the Museum’s expert on State, National and Common Core State Standards and other issues, policies, and programs that impact and affect schools and teachers. The Manager will foster active, productive, and communicative relationships with area educators, administrators, PTAs, regional arts and cultural institutions, arts education organizations, and other institutions and individuals whose mission it is to serve students and teachers. The Manager will maintain a strong working knowledge of current trends in arts and museum education and the needs of the 21st century learner.

 

Responsibilities Include:

  • Develop, supervise and evaluate children’s PreK-12 onsite and offsite educational programming in keeping with museum’s mission and strategic direction.
  • Develop annual strategies for new programs, existing program growth and revision, assessment, and student and teacher audience development.
  • Work proactively and collaboratively with teachers and administrators in program development, to assure Museum programs and curricula support and meet the changing needs of the education community.
  • Develop and implement PreK-12 interdisciplinary curriculum materials and school tour objectives in fulfillment of State, National and Common Core Standards in education for both onsite and outreach programs.
  • Manage all aspects of teacher professional development programs, including administration, scheduling, content development, collaborations with area educational institutions, and assessment.
  • Initiate and develop community partnerships and serve on internal and external committees that impact museum education.
  • Coordinate and implement outreach partnership programs with area partners.
  • Supervise education adjunct staff, interns and volunteers
  • Work with the Senior Director of Programs to develop and implement docent training
  • Develop and manage annual program budgets
  • Teach cross-curricular and art-related school and teacher programs.
  • Advocate museum education and the visual arts to extend the classroom experience.
  • Serve as an active member of departmental and cross-departmental teams.
  • Assist in the research and development of funding proposals for school, teacher, and docent programs
  • Remain current and actively engage in the larger field of museum education through professional affiliations

 

The successful candidate will have the following qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Art Education, Museum Education, Museum Studies, or related field required.
  • 4-5 years experience in museum education or art education
  • Record of successful accomplishments in developing and implementing creative educational programming in an informal learning setting including a museum, art center or similar.
  • Demonstrate successful experience in curriculum writing that supports multidisciplinary learning
  • Possess excellent writing, oral/teaching and listening skills and the ability to work effectively with others
  • Demonstrates knowledge of artistic media, art history and technology in education.
  • Record of successful teaching experience in museum or art classroom setting.
  • Excellent organizational skills, detail oriented, self-motivated, creative thinker
  • A dynamic individual with the ability to work independently and as a team member, along with excelling in a fast-paced environment
  • Strong working knowledge of museum education standards, theories, and practices, along with PreK-12 learning and teaching strategies, curriculum, and standards.
  • Familiarity with needs of schools in the surrounding region of Bucks County.
  • Maintain a positive approach to problem solving, collaborating with others, and approaching new tasks
  • A history of developing fundable, innovative school and teacher programs, setting strategic goals for programs along with their implementation and evaluation
  • Excellent project management skills and proficiency with Microsoft Office suite.
