Job Description
The multi-disciplined Designer works collaboratively with various departments throughout the museum to generate design solutions including, but not limited to, museum exhibitions and presentations, branding & identity, print collateral, infographics, education and programming, new media initiatives, membership offers, retail products and event and fundraising materials.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The following are the basic job duties:
ENVIRONMENTAL DESIGN
• Shares in the exhibition planning process with curatorial and exhibit staff in developing and designing interesting and stimulating visual presentation for informative, educational museum exhibitions
• Conceptualizes, develops and designs permanent, special, temporary and traveling exhibitions
• Organizes conceptual information into clear, coherent, and unified visual presentation
• Designs and selects the techniques and fabrication methods for all exhibit components, such as graphic design of panels, labels, and banners; architectural design of gallery and its layout; lighting; and fabrication of exhibit furniture
• Works with collections staff and preparator and/or conservators when preparing artifact layouts and determining fabrication materials and methods to ensure safety and care of artifacts
• Produces detailed documentation for fabrication and production
• Designs (or oversees the design of) all graphics related to exhibitions
• Coordinates and oversees production of graphics and exhibit furniture (in-house or contracted)
• Works with Director of Exhibits and Design to manage budget and schedules
• Oversees and participates in installation and punchlisting of exhibits
• Designs, produces and implements wayfinding and associated signage throughout public spaces
• Organizes the archiving of related design documents both physically and digitally
GRAPHIC DESIGN
• Conceptualizes and designs materials for brochures, mailings, retail and licensing, etc. across departments
• Designs and produces production-ready artwork as required
• Participates in print review process and effectively communicates with project managers and vendors
• Collaborates with HOF team in conceptualizing and designing new media initiatives including, but not limited to, websites, apps, onsite interactives and media
• Provides design support to multi-media department
• Establishes cross-platform identity and branding direction for HOF projects, events and initiatives
• Organizes the archiving of related design documents both physically and digitally
Job Requirements
• Bachelor’s degree in applicable field required. Master degree a plus.
• Minimum of 3 years of experience as an exhibit designer in a museum setting or comparable experience in an agency
• Candidates must have excellent aesthetic sensibility; be proficient in Adobe (Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign) and Microsoft software products on a Mac platform; have excellent written and oral communication skills; be capable of carrying out complex projects with minimal supervision; be self-motivated and able to work under strict design/production deadlines; and work well with colleagues in a team environment
• Candidate must have strong exhibit design portfolio
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers
• Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing
