Function of Position

Responsible to the President of the Board for overseeing the day-to-day operations of the museum and maintaining a presence in the Mammoth Site when it is open to the public; making executive decisions pertaining to site-museum operations, emergencies, and personnel issues; assisting in site-museum administration; maintaining building security; maintaining responsibility for daily cash handling and recording; serving as the building coordinator and primary contact for facilities issues; supervising site-museum operations staff; attending meetings and events as necessary; and performing other related duties as assigned.

Essential Functions

Oversees the day-to-day operations of the museum and serves as a supervisor for the site-museum operations staff.

Manages the finances of the site by budget planning and day to day management

Work in close partnership with scientific director to achieve Mammoth Site’s scientific objectives

Manages fund raising and development activities.

Serves as manager of the site museum book store.

Maintains responsibility for daily cash handling and visitation records.

Analyzes visitor data for planning and goal setting.

Maintains building security, serves as building coordinator and primary contact for facilities issues

Assists with formulating and implementing museum policy.

Secondary Functions

Assists with the development and implementation of strategic plan

Assist board members and committee in Mammoth Site operations

Assist with museum fundraising events and planning.

Assists with the selection training of business office and staff.

Assists with press releases related to museum operations.

Interacts with all museum staff to facilitate a positive working environment, and museum visitors to promote the site.

Performs other related duties as assigned.

Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge or interest of Natural History of Western South Dakota especially mammoths is a plus.

Supervisory experience

3 years’ experience supervising 5 or more people in a business/operations environment

Good “people skills.”

Knowledge of budgeting and financial management.

Ability to use computers and variety of software programs not limited to but at a minimum MS Office.

Ability to communicate effectively.

Supervision Given and Received

Performs under President of the Board supervision. Supervises administrative and classified staff. Indirectly supervises volunteers.

Requirements

Qualifications

Minimum – Bachelor/Master’s degree in a related field;

Minimum – 3 years’ experience in managing operational finances and general management

Some training or coursework in natural history, and museum operations is a bonus

Experience managing operations in a nonprofit organization is desirable.

Future Promotion Path

Ability to grow into a Chief Operations Officer Position with responsibility, for both business and scientific goals a plus.
