Gallery Director
Department of Art and Art History, Georgetown University
The Department of Art and Art History invites applications for the position of Gallery Director beginning August, 2016.
This is a full time, non-tenure line position with a five-year, renewable contract. The department seeks applicants with at least five years of museum or gallery leadership, management, and curatorial experience.
The Director’s primary responsibility will be a major new campus gallery scheduled to open in Fall 2017, along with oversight of existing smaller exhibition spaces. S/he will work with a committee of faculty from the Department of Art and Art History and other academic programs to conceive and institute an innovative exhibition cycle of professional and student artists that stimulates interdisciplinary learning.
The Director reports to the Chair of the Department of Art and Art History and is responsible for all operational aspects of the galleries. S/he will curate exhibitions, negotiate terms of exhibitions, prepare contracts and loan requests, arrange insurance, and supervise the design and installation of all shows in the department’s galleries. S/he will have full-time support of an assistant gallery director and work with Museum Studies graduate students on exhibition design, preparation, and programming. Other duties will include leadership for development and marketing; budget oversight; and oversight of development of curricular and outreach programming for the campus community and beyond. The Director will hold the academic rank of Assistant or Associate Professor of the Practice and will, after one year in the position, teach two courses per year in the Department of Art & Art History.
Qualifications:
Doctoral degree in Art History (preferably in Modern or Contemporary Art)
Excellent skills in management, communication, and collaboration
Experience in exhibition development, curating, design, and installation, particularly exhibiting the work of living artists
Experience teaching and working with students at university level
Firm knowledge of contemporary art at national and international levels
Interest and selective grounding in art from a broader range of historical periods
Some experience in fund-raising and grant application
