Education and Outreach Manager at the Windsor Historical Society (Full-time)
Windsor Historical Society (WHS) has built a reputation as one of Connecticut’s leading small
museums. The Education and Outreach Manager works to make WHS and the Town of
Windsor’s historic resources attractive for a wide demographic range of visitors. With staff team,
plans, implements, markets, and evaluates WHS’s public programs with specific responsibility
for school, youth, family, and community collaborative programs. Manages WHS’s social media.
I. Education:
Learns the history of Windsor and its surrounds in order to share with learners of all ages
Understands the local and state curriculum standards
Serves as WHS’s liaison to schools, ascertaining and responding to teacher needs
Researches, plans, promotes, and implements onsite and off-site field trips for K-12
students in Windsor; initiates more contact with schools in the Greater Hartford region
Hosts student-oriented exhibits at WHS
Works with staff to recruit and train volunteer guides for student field trips
Produces resource materials for teachers
In conjunction with staff and community program planning team, plans, hosts, and
evaluates WHS’s public programs with particular attention to school, youth, family, and
community collaborative programs
II. Outreach:
Manages WHS’s social media including Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram
Assists the Director with public relations tasks
Generates content for newsletter and website; assists with website design and updates
Helps with House Tour, Auction and other fundraisers
Develops and promotes offsite exhibits and events featuring WHS content
Represents WHS with civic organizations and as a public speaker
III. Other:
In absence of volunteers and other staff, steps in to greet guests, sells gift shop items,
gives tours of historic houses, assists patrons in the Research Library
Attends and assists with Board meetings and WHS events as required
Rotates Saturday duty with other staff
QUALIFICATIONS: Master’s degree in public history, museum studies, American studies, or
related field; command of New England material culture and history; teaching experience;
Flexibility and ease with youth and volunteer audiences and the working environment of a team-
based small museum is essential. Excellent organizational, communication, research, computer,
social media skills required. Knowledge of PastPerfect database and Adobe Photoshop and
InDesign is helpful. This is a 35 hours per week full-time position with some weekend and evening
