Since its founding in 1947, the South Bend Museum of Art has provided insight into the art, history and culture of the region and nation.  A full spectrum of contemporary and historical art is featured in five galleries and a wide range of artistic traditions are taught in our art studios.

SBMA is the community’s art museum and one of our priorities is to take art beyond our walls.  The dynamic education programs and events diversify the museum’s audience and energize the community, engaging adults and youth with creative, inspiring activities.

We are now seeking a strong, experienced educator to take the reins of this exciting program.  Must be a hands-on educator who has experience working with a broad range of ages, youth to adult, and has a a passion for teaching and making community connections.

The Curator of Education assures that the education program is effective, relevant, of strong aesthetic and educational value and commensurate with the Museum’s mission.  Develops, creates and facilitates outreach and school programs.  Supervises the Studio Program Manager, who directly manages the on-site studio program.   Works with the Studio Program Manager to create and implement school programs and family programs.

The Curator of  Education is a key member of  the Museum’s Staff Program Committee and works closely with other department heads and the Executive Director to determine the overall programming for the museum.  Reports to the Executive Director.

Specific responsibilities include:

• Oversee the Studio Program.
• Create and implement outreach and school programs which utilize community partnerships and broaden the accessibility of the Museum
• Manage and implement the Scholastic Art Awards project
• Cultivate and provide resources for area teachers
• Recruit, supervise and train the Docent corps, in conjunction with the Snite Museum of Art at the University of Notre Dame
• Develop and manage education budget

Requirements

• Masters Degree in art history, fine arts, education or another art-related or education field; or equivalent experience.
• Knowledge of museum education, including best practices in tour programs
• Desire to work with a regional arts community
• Ability to speak publically and interact comfortably with wide range of individuals
