Curator opportunities—expressions of interest

The Media Majlis at Northwestern University in Qatar

The Media Majlis at Northwestern University in Qatar (NU-Q) is receiving expressions of interest for their anticipated positions for freelance and staff curators to initiate and develop exhibitions for this new museum project.

This purpose-built space will house extensive integrated technology, allowing for exhibitions to explore and interrogate the content of media. Combined with physical objects, and additional multiple spaces for exhibition related components including film screenings, performances, outdoor programs, and creative ventures, the new NU-Q building will offer a new experience for museum visitors in Qatar and the Gulf region. It is anticipated that the museum will open within the next 2-3 years.

The purpose of The Media Majlis is the exploration, discussion and interrogation of media, journalism and communication—pasts, presents and futures—through global, regional and local/Qatar lenses. Media Majlis exhibitions will explore, investigate and question narrow but deep, multi-faceted subjects. The Media Majlis and its programs will be open to the public as well as serving as a responsive classroom, offering faculty creative space to engage students in well-researched content, stories and engagements.

Northwestern University in Qatar (NU-Q) draws from its parent organization, Northwestern University (Evanston, Illinois), a distinguished history, famous programs and an exceptional faculty. Founded in partnership with Qatar Foundation, NU-Q provides a framework through which students explore the world and, ultimately, shape its future through its distinguished schools of communication, journalism, and liberal arts.  NU-Q is located in Education City, in the Qatari capital Doha.

The anticipated curator positions (freelance and staff) will be charged with conceptualizing exhibitions and, with the director, the medium to long-term exhibition vision for the museum. Through collaborations (with academics, communities, collections and museums, nationally and internationally), research and engagement, curators will lead on the creation of absorbing, rigorous and groundbreaking exhibitions in the Arabian Peninsula.

The Media Majlis is interested in hearing from curators with minimum 5 years curation experience in progressively more senior roles, 7+ years highly desirable; Masters degree in museum studies, curatorial studies, or closely related subject-matter area is required. Additionally, some combinations of training and/or experience in one or more of the following: journalism, film, TV, radio, digital media, gaming, digital curation, Gulf or MENA Studies, performance.  Fluency in English is required with knowledge of Arabic, or other regional language, highly desirable.
