Description
The Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington, DC seeks a Chief of External Affairs to manage the public face of the museum. Responsible for one of the museum’s largest and most dynamic offices that seeks to engage audiences of all ages through public programs, marketing, special events, and visitor services
Primary Responsibilities
Provides leadership and strategic direction, establishing long-term goals and priorities, across all areas of External Affairs, with a current emphasis on developing creative public programs in music and performance.
Develops a variety of public programs, including musical and theatrical performances, and establishes new series appealing to various target audiences.  Initiates partnerships with outside organizations to develop and host performances and series at the museum.
Responsible for the overall public profile of the museum.  Develops communications and marketing plans to raise awareness of the museum’s brand, collections and activities.
Responsible for special events, including externally sponsored events as well as SAAM openings and receptions.  Oversees the SAAM Visitor Services program, including information desk, brochures, signage, and volunteer staffing.
Supervises staff and manages the office budget and funds.  Prepares implementation plans and monitors expenditure of funds.  Works proactively to develop outside partnerships and sponsors for museum initiatives.

This is a full-time permanent GS-14 position (starting salary $108,887) with promotion potential.
