Description
The American Academy in Rome (AAR), founded in 1894 and one of the oldest overseas centers for advanced independent work in the humanities and the arts, seeks a Vice President for Finance and Administration (VPFA). This is a compelling opportunity to contribute to the strategic growth of the AAR, a unique hybrid academic and cultural nonprofit organization with 70 full time staff in New York City and Rome.
Based in New York City and reporting directly to the AAR President, the VPFA oversees a $12.7M operating budget, $95M endowment, and an 11-acre campus facility owned by the AAR. S/he serves as the chief financial officer and senior executive responsible for broad oversight of all financial, legal, human resource, operational, retail and other business matters for the institution.
The new VPFA will work closely with the President to help shape the organization’s strategic vision and goals, will assist the President in many aspects of institutional management, and will serve as “acting-in-charge” in his absence. S/he will lead staff to operationalize a newly crafted vision for the institution and will closely collaborate with the Vice President for Development, the Director, the Deputy Director and the Director of Communications. The VPFA is also expected to provide regular communication with and financial reporting to the Board of Trustees.
The ideal candidate will bring experience gained through increasingly responsible roles in comparably complex settings. This experience will ideally include budgeting and planning, financial forecasting and analysis, endowment management, accounting, human resources, business operations and oversight of facilities and asset development. Significant experience in an academic or other nonprofit setting would be a distinct asset. International experience is also desirable. A master’s degree in finance, accounting or business is preferred. The VPFA will be an accessible and self-directed colleague, an excellent communicator with a vibrant entrepreneurial spirit, integrity, and openness consistent with AAR’s culture and values.
