Director

The Wendell Gilley Museum (WGM) is located in Southwest Harbor, Maine.  Celebrating the life and work of Wendell Gilley, a pioneer of decorative bird carving, WGM promotes the art of bird carving through exhibits and educational programs.  WGM inspires appreciation of the visual arts, engagement in artistic creativity, and respect and care for the natural world.

Community

WGM is located on Mount Desert Island in Maine, the home of Acadia National Park – the most spectacular natural scenery in the country in a vibrant year round community.  WGM is widely known for its warm and creative personality and welcoming presence.

Role/responsibilities 

The Director is responsible for implementing the overall vision and mission of WGM and reporting to the Board of Directors.  She/he will, either directly or supervising staff be responsible for:

  • Managing operations – including budget, cash flow, oversee and hire staff.
  • Identifying, leading and enhancing revenue opportunities by participating in the cultivation and solicitation of major donors.
  • Helping build membership and strengthen community relationships that enhance and create strategic partnerships that advance the educational outreach activities of WGM.
  • Preserving and enhancing WGM’s permanent collection in keeping with the highest museum standards.
  • Demonstrating creativity and initiative in developing relevant, intelligent and compelling exhibits.
  • Working with the WGM Board, staff, volunteers and others to develop goals and strategies to implement the Museum’s strategic plan.
Requirements

Desired traits & characteristics

  • The Director will be a dynamic and creative leader who understands the complexities of managing a small museum and have a passion for the art it celebrates.
  • The Director should have Master’s Degree from an appropriately accredited institution in Museum Studies.  Equivalent experience may be substituted for education on a year-for-year basis.
  • The Director should have excellent written and verbal communication skills.
