Watertown Children’s Theatre seeks a Teaching Artist for our fall class on stagecraft, production and design. This class, entitled “CYC Level 1: Foundation” is open to students in grades 5-12 and is part of our CYC Backstage program which, serves as the basis for all technical/production work at WCT. The Foundation course equips students with basic, necessary knowledge in all areas of theatrical design, technology, and safety procedures. Foundation CYC members are given priority as crew members for WCT productions.
The class will run Mondays from September 12th through November 7th from 5:30-6:45 PM (no class 10/3, 10/10). There will be a final showcase for the class on Saturday, November 12th at 11:00 AM.
The teaching artist for this class should have a working knowledge of different aspects of theatrical production or design, will teach and oversee the curriculum as a whole, and will create a framework for a final project that incorporates each different design element the class learns about. This teaching artist will work with WCT’s Education Coordinator to bring in guest artists throughout the session to delve into each aspect of production and lead workshops on new topics.
We hope class will touch upon, or at least define, as many of the below options as possible:

•Scenic Design/Painting
•Properties Construction & Management
•Makeup and Hair Design
•Stage Direction
•Musical Direction
•Choreography
WCT Teaching Artists coordinate, develop, and implement performing arts educational programs to reach a broad and diverse audience.
This position requires:
– Experience with or understanding of aspects of theatrical production, stagecraft and design, as well as how to teach it to students of different ages
– BFA or equivalent experience
– Ability to implement successful methods of classroom management, in addition to upholding the WCT mission, which is “to foster self discovery, creativity, confidence, group responsibility, and pride in accomplishment, as well as the development of skills in an enjoyable, non-competitive environment.”
– Prior experience and a passion for implementing educational theatre programming and strengthening current programming for children and teens
– Excellent communication and organizational skills
– The creativity and flexibility to implement the structure of the class and incorporate guest artists to create a well-rounded educational experience with a culminating project
