The Royal Ontario Museum (ROM) is Canada’s pre-eminent international museum and houses prominent collections in its World Cultures and Natural History divisions (www.rom.on.ca). The ROM is pleased to invite applications for the full-time position of Associate Curator of Islamic Art and Architecture and Archaeology. This is a tenure-track, entry-level position, comparable to an Assistant Professor position at a university.

The Royal Ontario Museum holds an important collection of Islamic art, the largest one in Canada. The museum has a long history of research focused on Islamic art and archaeology through fieldwork, curatorial acquisitions, gallery development and exhibitions. The successful candidate will join the West Asia section of the Department of World Cultures. She/He will have a strong record of problem-oriented research and publications that will complement the ROM’s existing research strengths.

ROM Curators are expected to: develop a program of externally funded scholarly research and publications; curate and continue building the Islamic and related collections; participate in the development and rotation of new permanent galleries and travelling exhibitions; and actively participate and contribute to the development of public programming in a variety of formats from on-site to on-line. The successful candidate will be the public spokesperson for Islamic cultures at the ROM and will have an important role in developing plans for the engagement of Canadian Islamic communities.

Requirements

Applicants must have a Ph.D. in Islamic art and architecture and related fields at the time of appointment. Applicants with specialty in areas of Islamic Art, Cultures, Architecture, and Archaeology, are encouraged to apply, but those with a research focus on Iran and the neighboring Persianate world are preferred. Applicants should have a strong background of work within a museum environment and experience working with Islamic communities. Applicants also must be qualified for cross-appointment to the University of Toronto.

Salary and rank are commensurate with experience as stipulated in the Collective Agreement between the ROM and ROM Curatorial Association, the current salary range starts at $64,537.00 per annum. Additional benefit coverage is governed by the terms of the ROMCA Collective Agreement.
