Job Description

The Asian Art Museum has initiated a comprehensive fundraising campaign to support its exciting new vision and plans. The Associate Director of Individual Giving will play a central role in this plan, helping to grow the museum’s contributed revenue and developing a more robust pipeline of donors.

The Associate Director of Individual Giving, reporting to the Director of Individual and Major Giving, manages the identification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of individual donors for the Jade Circle (annual gifts of $3,000 to $24,000), the Connoisseurs’ Council (annual gifts of $1,500 for acquisitions), and the Asian Art Museum Council (annual gifts of $5,000) – a total of approximately 200 donor households.  S/he is expected to solicit donors directly as well as directing and assisting volunteers in solicitation.

S/he will:

•     Raise annual revenue of $950,000, and increase revenue over the next 3 to 5 years;

•     manage a personal portfolio of individual donors who give $3,000 to $24,000 annually;

•     manage the volunteer committees for Jade Circle, the Connoisseurs’ Council, and the Asian Art Museum Council;

•     supervise a Development Associate in completing the day-to-day operations of the various donor groups;

•     support the Director of Individual and Major Giving in benefit fulfillment and stewardship efforts for donors at the level of $25,000 to $100,000;

•     lead and manage a full range of donor activities that include a travel program, fundraising and cultivation events;

•     develop long-term relationships built on a firm understanding of donors’ interests, passions, and values.

The incumbent must thoroughly understand, and be able to articulate, the Asian Art Museum’s mission, vision, culture, values, history, key stakeholders, programs, and finances.

Job Requirements

•     Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university

•     Four (4) years of solid experience in fundraising, including experience working directly with leadership and volunteers; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience

•     Strong written and verbal communication skills, experience drafting fundraising correspondence preferred; professional demeanor; strong interpersonal skills; flexibility; sense of humor

•     Proven ability to personally solicit donors for annual gifts, sustain and grow donor relationships

•     Knowledge of fundraising principles, techniques, and ethics; understanding of nonprofit environments

•     Demonstrated ability to successfully organize workload in a fast-paced environment; maintain several projects of equal priority simultaneously; sustain focus, productivity, and accuracy under pressure

•     Proficiency in MS Word and Excel; knowledge of PowerPoint desirable

•     Experience using fundraising database software; Raiser’s Edge experience preferred

•     High-level administrative and management skills; good research, planning, analytical, problem-solving, organizational skills; strong follow-through

•     Ability to work independently, using good judgment, resourcefulness, and initiative; tolerate ambiguity; respond to multiple demands; direct and supervise others

•     Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with staff, volunteers, and members of the general public

•     Availability to work nights and weekends as needed for events or deadlines

•     Knowledge of Bay Area philanthropy is desirable

•     Knowledge of Asian art and culture a plus
