Job Description

The Deputy Director, Marketing and Communications will work in partnership with the Museum’s Director and executive team to develop and execute a comprehensive marketing plan that repositions the brand among cultural consumers and grows the newly diversified constituency. The strategy will include traditional and digital media, social media, e-communications, direct marketing and guerilla marketing, and must address the challenge of keeping traditional audiences engaged and enthused while building equity with new audiences.

The ideal candidate must be a creative thinker with strong consensus building skills. Superior management expertise and the ability to build relationships, both internally and externally, will ensure that the brand and the activities to promote it are effective, successfully managed and continually measured. An understanding of the visual art world and its audiences is essential. A highly aesthetic nature is essential.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

Marketing

  • Develop and implement a comprehensive marketing plan, including outreach and promotion through the primary marketing channels:
    1. Advertising, Outreach & Promotion
    2. Website & E-communications
    3. Social Media
    4. Digital Content Strategy;
  • Supervise Marketing Department staff including the Marketing Manager/Director, Digital Marketing Manager, Outreach and Promotion Coordinator, Production Coordinator, and Marketing Associate;
  • Develop, with Creative Director and outside agency, an institutional brand campaign that helps reposition the museum among new generations of museum-goers;
  • Develop comprehensive digital content strategy;
  • Plan and execute, with Institutional Development team, marketing sponsorship initiatives;
  • Ensure that marketing strategies are executed consistently across all platforms;
  • Build internal consensus and foster a shared understanding of the meaning and value of branding in general and of the organization’s brand specifically;
  • Execute marketing priorities and brand directives and ensure continued evolution of the brand internally and externally.;
  • P & L responsibility in excess of $2mm, 5 direct reports.

Creative Services

  • Supervise the Consulting Creative Director and Creative Studio;
  • Ensure the Creative Studio is appropriately resourced to meet institutional needs, and work-flows are productive and effective on all levels.

Communications

  • Supervise the Director of Communications;
  • Ensure earned-media strategy and internal communications align with broader marketing, brand strategies and goals.

Visitor Experience

  • Supervise the Director of Visitor Experience;
  • Develop long-term visitor experience strategies vis-v-vis space planning and technology.

Management

  • With Creative Director, supervise execution of internal/external promotional materials to ensure brand consistency, including: advertising, public information, signage, electronic and print direct mail communications, website, and social media content;
  • Oversee the planning and implementation of integrated marketing and advertising efforts to support audience development, membership and fundraising initiatives.  Measure and report outcomes;
  • Manage all advertising for the Museum and its exhibitions and programs. Work with Creative Director to plan and conceive advertising campaigns, develop design and copy concepts, and implement print, radio, and television campaigns;
  • Work with CRM team to ensure data capture and ROI analysis of marketing efforts on an ongoing basis.

Job Requirements

  • BA in marketing, business or related fields. Masters degree in marketing, arts management, museum management or related field preferred;
  • Minimum 10 years experience in marketing and/or brand building. Relevant experience with the arts and/or the for-profit art world is essential;
  • Understanding of and experience with all channels of marketing including advertising, direct mail, digital marketing, and social media;
  • Proven experience in development and implementation of marketing plans with clearly articulated, measurable goals;
  • Excellent oral and written communication and presentation skills;
  • Ability to interact professionally, collaboratively and productively with colleagues, senior staff, trustees, and outside contractors. Experience supervising professional staff required;
  • Must possess personal qualities of forward-thinking and a “can do” attitude;
  • Demonstrated ability to be resourceful, thoughtful, and able to work within limited budgets;
  • A commitment to excellence and work of the highest quality.
