Public Affairs Specialist

The Freer Gallery of Art and the Arthur M. Sackler Gallery together form the Smithsonian’s museums of Asian art. The galleries are devoted to the research, acquisition, exhibition, care and management of the renowned collections of Asian art in each museum and American art in the Freer Gallery. The mission of the Galleries is to encourage enjoyment and understanding of the arts of Asia and the cultures that produced them, and to use works of art to inspire study and provoke thought. The two museums are co-administered and share the same staff.

The Public Affairs Specialist carries out a range of media, public relations and marketing functions to broaden awareness, encourage visitors and gain public support for the museums’ mission and programs. In addition to general public affairs duties, this position specifically supports departmental functions related to media strategy, creating press materials, interacting with and responding to press, coordinating film and image requests, leading new community involvement initiatives, and coordinating select museum-wide events.  The position reports to the Head of Public Affairs and Marketing.

The Public Affairs Specialist works collaboratively in a small team, and interacts with departments across the museum to develop creative and innovative ways to present the museum to a variety of audiences. The position requires a background and 3-5 years experience in communications and marketing, outstanding oral and written communication skills, experience with multi-platform promotions, a desire to work beyond the traditional boundaries of a press office, and an ability to work in a complex institutional setting. The salary range is $52,688 – $68,465 per year.
