Description
Position Summary
The Exhibition Designer is responsible for designing engaging exhibitions and visitor experiences, in collaboration with curators, educators, fabricators, artists, technologists, and other internal and external partners.
Responsibilities
- Design exhibitions that use creative design solutions to present objects, content and experiences in appropriate, memorable ways to diverse audiences.
- Liaison with internal staff, external resources and contractors as needed.
- Develop design and presentation documentation from concept through schematic to detailed construction/fabrication drawings at relevant milestones.
- Collaborate and coordinate with Exhibit Project Team members (e.g., curators, educators, registrars, exhibition preparator, multimedia, etc.) on exhibit design, fabrication and execution.
- Manage several design projects simultaneously.
- Develop project design strategies and schedules and track progress against plan for on-time completion.
- Evaluate and propose design alternatives, as necessary, to help solve budget or technical challenges.
- Manage all design documents and distribution to other team members (for review, revisions, etc.).
- Coordinate and facilitate meetings as necessary to ensure the continuing progress of the project.
- Meet regularly with the Deputy Director: Design & Exhibits to discuss design ideas and status of projects.
- Assist as needed with the installation of exhibit components, collection objects and lighting equipment (using powered lift or ladder as required).
- Create interpretive graphics for exhibitions and event signs as required.
- Ensure that exhibits are designed to be intellectually and emotionally engaging.
Requirements
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in design, architecture or other related field.
- 5 or more years of design experience focused on developing exhibitions in museums
- Experience developing interactive and/or technical museum exhibit components.
- Track record of designing complex projects with teams and tight deadlines.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge and ability to create read and understand design and architectural drawings and specifications.
- Knowledge and ability to effectively use software (pc platform) to develop, document and present exhibition projects. Knowledge of VectorWorks, CorelDraw, SketchUp, InDesign, Photoshop, llustrator, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel and Microsoft PowerPoint strongly desired.
- Knowledge about various techniques to safely and effectively display valuable museum collection objects.
- Ability to work with a wide diversity of people and to build consensus.
- Demonstrated ability to manage and deliver the design of small to large projects within established timelines and budgets.
- Ability to read and interpret documents, instructions, and procedure manuals.
