Description
The assistant preparator works with the exhibitions coordinator to install permanent and temporary art exhibitions, to move artworks, to store artworks, and to pack artworks for shipment.
Assistant preparator installs artworks in permanent and temporary galleries: as necessary, prepare 3-D digital models of galleries and artworks to be installed within them; as necessary, repair and paint exhibition walls; as necessary, fabricate and paint display pedestals and risers; safely secure artworks to walls and pedestals; as necessary, fabricate mounts for sculptures and cradles for books; fabricate and install exhibition labels, text panels, and photo panels; order and install vinyl wall signs; adjust lights; and install computer monitors, Smart TVs, iPads, audiovisual equipment, etc., within galleries.
Assistant preparator will work with curators and registrar to ensure safe and efficient storage of artworks within vaults.
Assistant preparator will pack and unpack artworks for shipment, including occasional crate fabrication.
Assistant preparator will assist curator of education in moving artworks from vaults to the conference room for ND classes visiting to examine artworks not on public display.
Assistant preparator will unload and load art shipments.
Assistant preparator will assist movement of art across campus and to and from offsite storage facility.
As needed, the assistant preparator will assist with setup for special events: move tables and chairs, set up sound system, set up podium, etc.
Requirements
Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in art, graphic design, industrial design, or related field.
Three to five years working experience in an art museum. Conversant in art museum standards for collections care and safe art handling; general construction and painting skills, ability to safely operate power tools and to work with adhesives and paint; education and experience with two-dimensional and three-dimensional design; ability to design and produce simple text and photo panels with word processing or graphic design software; familiarity with design software such as Adobe Illustrator, In-Design, Photoshop, SketchUp, etc., and ability to use EmBark collections management software. Must be able to lift and carry artwork and equipment weighing 80 lbs. Preferred Qualifications: Master’s degree in art, graphic design, industrial design or related field. |
