The Development Research Analyst independently identifies, qualifies, and researches major gift prospects and donors to support the Development department in meeting the Aquarium’s contributed revenue goals. The Development Research Analyst is an integral member of the Development team, specifically responsible for conducting high-level, thorough biographical and financial research and preparing confidential profiles and briefings for the Chief Development Officer, Vice President of Development, Development Directors, and Donor Relations Officers.

Core Responsibilities

  • Uses advanced research skills to collect, evaluate, analyze, qualify, organize, package, and disseminate donor/prospect information in a way that maximizes its usefulness and enables accurate and educated decision-making in the development of fundraising strategies
  • Writes, edits, and proofreads briefing materials including, but not limited to, donor research profiles and other basic research reports. Ensures accuracy and completeness of reports and other documents
  • Prioritizes and implements schedule of screenings to ensure that top prospects are properly identified and moved into the prospect management pipeline
  • Collaborates with Development staff to clarify research questions and ensure accurate interpretation and application of biographical information and assigned ratings such as wealth, capacity, propensity, interest and readiness
  • Assists in maintaining accurate and up-to-date donor information in both paper and electronic prospect files; trains staff as needed on research-related data entry
  • Monitors market trends and media sources for relevant information on major gift donors and prospects
  • Ensures compliance with ethical standards and best practices for prospect research; assists Development staff in understanding and complying with same
  • Researches, manages and implements best practices for research products, protocols, vendor resources and database use related to research

Absolutely Required Skills / Knowledge / Ability / Experience or Education

  • A bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience required
  • Minimum 3-5 years experience in research, data analytics, data mining/modeling in a non-profit, university or other philanthropic institution
  • High proficiency and advanced skills with online search methods, as well as prospect research tools including Lexis Nexis, iWave Pro, Guidestar, NOZA Search, Foundation Search, Foundation Directory, and others
  • Knowledge of solicitation strategy and major gifts process and the ability to work with Development Officers to help build prospect strategy
  • Advanced skills with CRM database, Microsoft Excel, and other relevant software
  • Excellent writing skills

Desired Skills / Knowledge / Ability / Experience or Education

  • Experience working for a museum or other visitor serving organization
  • Proficiency in The Raiser’s Edge database
