Exhibit Designer [Lake County Forest Preserves, Libertyville, IL]

Description

The Exhibit Designer is responsible for the design, fabrication, and installation of new exhibits, and the maintenance and refurbishment of existing exhibits. Designs, fabricates and installs 3-D components for new exhibits. Design work includes computer rendering/modeling, prototyping, and the production of shop drawings. Fabrication work includes production of exhibit elements, preparation of mounts, cabinetry, interactive and audio visual components. Installation work includes on/off site fabrication, working with other staff or contractors and preparing maintenance manuals.

Projects could include mounting, laminating, and framing.  Works with staff on district-wide exhibit projects including interior and exterior installations and maintenance. Participates as a project team member for the planning of new exhibits.

Requirements

Bachelor’s Degree in Design, Museum Studies, Fine Arts, Industrial Technology or other related field. Three years of experience working in a museum setting. Must possess a sound knowledge of professional museum practices and standards set forth by the American Alliance of Museums. Project management skills necessary to develop and maintain short and long range schedules, goals, and objectives. Analytical skills necessary to interpret blueprints, estimate construction costs, make judgments about the efficient and effective use of space, and consider public safety in exhibit design.  Ability to use a computer for exhibit/graphic design. Familiarity with Auto CAD, Sketchup, Illustrator, and Photoshop. Ability to use a wide variety of power tools including table saws, sanders, drills, pneumatic tools etc. Must possess valid driver’s license.
