Vizcaya Museum and Gardens seeks a creative and energetic professional to serve as its Assistant Curator at this pivotal moment in the estate’s history. Vizcaya is a National Historic Landmark in Miami, FL, that is accredited by the American Alliance of Museums. The estate’s Centennial is approaching and Vizcaya’s 5-Year Strategic Plan guides ongoing efforts to complete capital improvements and enhance the institution’s role as a vital community asset. Vizcaya attracts nearly 200,000 visitors annually (including program participants and clients at evening events) and the coming years will see increasing emphasis on the rehabilitation and reinterpretation of the Vizcaya Village to introduce new urban agriculture and open space initiatives there.
The Assistant Curator will support the Contemporary Arts Program (CAP), including all aspects of content development, research, artist relationships, exhibition planning and logistics, installation and maintenance, design and editing of interpretive materials, program development and budget tracking. Additionally, and beyond CAP, s/he will support exhibition initiatives, including the development of case displays and temporary exhibitions in the decorated rooms, and virtual initiatives that endeavor to disseminate information on the collection. This position is also responsible for general collections and archival research in support of the Historic Furnishings Report. Other tasks will include some logistical and administrative support of the division, and other tasks as needed.
The Assistant Curator works in a team consisting of an Archivist, a Collections Care Specialist, a Collections Management Assistant (vacant), a Conservator, and a Curator. The team is led by the Deputy Director for Collections and Curatorial Affairs. The position reports to the Curator.

Requirements
Minimum Requirements: Bachelor’s degree in Art History, Museum Studies or related field. One year of experience working in a curatorial capacity for an established art gallery or museum. The position requires an individual able to lift up to 35 pounds and work on a ladder. Ability to work on a flexible work schedule, including evenings, weekends and holidays. Must possess or obtain a valid driver’s license.
Additional preferences: Familiarity with the contemporary art landscape in South Florida. Competency with software such as Adobe Photoshop. Fluency in Spanish. Ability to represent the museum in a professional manner. Excellent communication skills.
